Many Web developers will use several different technology models in the construction of their sites, including:
HTML code, which is at the core of Web development. Today, there are many options for creating HTML code. Many Web-editing applications are available. Some of these applications (often called WYSIWYG or "what you see is what you get") can be learned quickly by those familiar with word-processing programs and require no direct knowledge of HTML code. Popular products of this type include Macromedia Dreamweaver and Microsoft Front Page. Still, many developers choose to hand code
HTML using text editors or HTML editors such as Macromedia Home Site or BBEdit. This permits them greater and more precise control and optimizes coding efficiency and file sizes.
UVM employees and students who are creating Web pages and sites should acquire a basic knowledge of well-formed HTML code. For users looking to use Web-authoring software, the UVM Web Team recommends Macromedia Dreamweaver.
Applications and scripts: As the Web matures, more people are using the Web to make transactions, do business and search large data repositories. Sites using features such as e-commerce, constantly changing information (such as news and bulletin boards) and large collections (such as library catalogs and search engines) rely on more complex Web applications to drive their Web sites. Through the use of Web programming and databases, Web developers managing these types of sites can deliver custom and dynamic Web pages to visitors.
Audio and video: More developers are enriching the content of their Web sites by adding multimedia. This often includes audio and video files but may also entail more interactive applications such as QuickTime VR and Macromedia Flash movies.
Appropriate use of technology is paramount to successful Web implementation. Multiple technology use can increase the complexity of site, impede usability, increase cost and complicate upgrades. These costs should always be balanced with the benefits gained from supplemental technology use.
In addition, the type of tools and technologies you choose may very well determine the level of support you receive from UVM. Therefore, it is important to consult the Basic Web Tools and Advanced Web Tools charts, in the menu at left, to find out the UVM support you may receive.
