UVM WEB GUIDE: Template Publishing System

Why Use the UVM Template?

The UVM Web Team encourages all official UVM department and program* Web sites to use the template, which offers these advantages:

  • A common identity and graphic design for UVM.
  • Common navigation features for users, who find their way around the UVM and departmental Web sites via the overall banner links, Quick Links, etc.
  • Time and money saved. You won't have to concentrate on building a Web design from scratch, and you can use any Web editor or hand-code pages in HTML.
  • Documentation, through this Template Guide, which provides a common source for maintaining departmental Web sites. That way, if departmental Webmasters change, site maintenance is more easily transferable.
  • Support of the UVM Web Team, which provides help via classes, e-mail and office hours. You may join the listserv for UVM Web developers or take classes through University Training and Development.
  • Flexibility. The template can be updated centrally by the Web Team, according to changes in UVM's graphic design. Meanwhile, departmental Webmasters are free to create their own content, graphics and site organization, and those with advanced HTML and programming skills may use JavaScript, PHP, Perl and Java to work within the template.

* What constitutes a university "department" and, thus, an "official" university Web site? A "department" includes any academic or administrative program, center, event or publication that is housed at and/or receives funding from the University of Vermont. Any Web site published by such a department is defined as an "official" university Web site.
