UVM WEB GUIDE: Template Publishing System

Introduction: Explanation of Template Features

To understand how the UVM Web Template works, it's important to understand what we mean by the word "template." We don't mean that you will be copying and recopying a single Web page template file and filling in the blanks — as you would do with a resumé template in Microsoft Word. Instead, for your first Web page, you will be copying three files to your Web space, downloading and editing two of them (default.html and defaultmenu.html) on your computer and then uploading them. The third file (magicscript.php) does all the work for you, dynamically assembling your files into a single Web page that follows the UVM Web design and navigation. (Later, you may create more files to build additional pages on your site.)

Because of how this dynamic template technology works, you cannot simply go to a template Web site, copy the design and HTML coding of a single page into your Web editor and edit the words on that page. Instead, you will need to download the proper files and edit each file separately so that the template technology may successfully assemble all the sections of the Web page for you.

By constructing your Web site in this way, your departmental site will be tied in to the overall UVM Web design, allowing your pages to automatically receive overall design and navigation updates.

This section of the Template Publishing System guide will identify the template pieces, explain how they fit together and describe how Magicscript works to assemble them.
