As part of the UVM 2008 redesign process, we received feedback that departmental Webmasters who didn't have a great deal of design experience wished they could obtain better looking homepages. To answer this need, we have created a set of HTML templates to be used in the publishing system. These "templates" include all the files you need (with placeholder images) to create a new homepage that will look great in the UVM look.
Below you will find thumbnails of and links to .zip files of each of our template folders. Click on the image to see the template in a browser window. Then click on the link and you will be prompted to save or decompress the folder and then save it to your local computer.
Once you have decompressed the folder on your local computer, you can upload the contents of the folder to a test/development area in your public_html. The best method for uploading is to use a simple application such as WinSCP for Windows (available for free download on the UVM software website or Fetch for Mac OSX (the app comes on all Macs). For both applications you will be prompted to enter the server name which is zoo.uvm.edu and the netid and password for your web account.
In that test area you create, you can begin altering the text and specializing the template for your department.
For all templates but number 6, you can edit the default.html without ever looking at the actual html code. Simply follow the instructions that are built into the placeholder text areas.
Images: To find images that are sized to fit our templates, view the image library.
NOTE: If your website falls under the College of Arts and Sciences, you will choose from the five preferred CAS templates.
General templates for all of UVM:
This template is used in a similar fashion to the homepage templates shown above. However, because it is only for a single page, the downloaded zip folder contains only two files - bio.html and faculty_bio.css. Make changes to the bio.html file and upload it. Copy the style information from faculty_bio.css into your existing css file. (If you don't have a stylesheet you can upload this one and in your magicoptions.html or defaultmenu.html "zero" line add a line that reads "stylesheet = faculty_bio.css")
The following template is used when your department sends news in the form of an e-mail. The final e-newsletter lives in your website for people to link to for further information. Also, if your e-mail client does not allow graphics, receivers can link to your website to see the newsletter in its entirety. All the information lives in one html document including the style sheet. Links to the images are full urls to your image folder that you will download and place in your public_html folder.
