UVM WEB GUIDE: Template Publishing System

Navigation and Design Features: Template Banner Settings

Design Feature: Banner Color

By default, your website, if in the UVM Publishing System, uses the standard green color main navigation bar. You may wish to change banner color to one of the options listed below. Many of these colors are associated with an area/topic within the naviagtion.

To apply the proper banner color, you must add a call to the zero line of your defaultmenu.html or to your configuration file. The style calls are listed below:

Color Area Call [see note below]
About UVM style=teal
  Admissions style=lightblue
  Academics style=sage
  Student Life style=rust
  Research style=gold
  Athletics style=grass
  Offices style=lime
  Outreach style=purple
  - style=blue
  - style=darkgray
  - style=khaki
  default n/a

Note: When applying this banner color call to your defaultmenu, it is placed in the third column of your zero line separated from the other calls by a comma with no spaces.
Example: e-mail=linguistics@uvm.edu,style=sage

Design Feature: Text Banner (formerly "secondary masthead")

If you'd like to bring more attention to your site's title, you may want to use the text banner (formerly called secondary masthead) option. A text banner appears below the navigation bar above your content area and appears in that same spot on every page of your site.

To apply a text banner to your site, you must add the following call to your zero line of your defaultmenu.html or your configuration file replacing the My Department Title with your own custom banner title: banner=My Department Title

In the zero line, you should have something like this:

email=john.doe@uvm.edu,style=academics,banner=Linguistics Department

Design Feature: Custom Banner (defaultbanner.html)

To create a custom banner in HTML that will appear below the top banner, above the content area and to the right of the main menu area, create a file called: defaultbanner.html

How is this different from the above mentioned text banner?

Good question. The text banner is for text/html only, while the custom banner (defaultbanner.html) can be a variety of other formats. Typically, if you use a graphic for your secondary banner, this is the feature to employ.

This feature can also be applied on a page-level basis (only appearing on a single page). To use a custom banner on a single page, append the name of the page for which you wish the file to appear onto the banner file name preceded by an underscore, example: defaultbanner-mypage.html

Navigation Feature: Banner Navigation (template_global_navigation.html)

The banner navigation is intended to remain consistent throughout the UVM website to ensure that newcomers to the website can find all that UVM has to offer. Currently these links cannot be changed.

That being said, we recognize that some units or departments have extraordinary navigational needs. In this case, you can add an additional horizontal navigation bar below the primary UVM navigational bar by creating a file called template_global_navigation.html. This file should contain html, by default, and it appears below any custom banners but above the content area.
