UVM Self-help Web Guide
This semester's help hours
By appointment for one-hour slots. Find out when.
Why use the UVM Publishing System?
- A common identity and graphic design for UVM.
- Common navigation features for users, who find their way around the UVM and departmental Web sites via the overall banner links, Quick Links, etc.
- Time and money saved. You won't have to hire a designer and developer to build a Web design from scratch
- Continuity: Thanks to this documentation, if departmental webmasters change, site maintenance is more easily transferable.
- Support of the UVM Web Team, which provides help via workshops, e-mail and help hours.
- Support of your peers by joining the listserv for UVM Web developers.
- Flexibility. The template can be updated centrally by the Web Team but departmental Webmasters are free to create their own content and identity.
What if I don't want a menu on my website?
No problem! If you wish your site to extend the full width of the template and not use a left menu for navigation, you can select the nomenu_2010 template feature. More on configuring your site for alternate templates...
Get a Template/Build a Website
Basic design components of a UVM website

- Branding banner (no file to alter)
- Home page banner (file name homepagebanner.html)
- Main menu (file name defaultmenu.html)
- Department name (edit file defaultmenu.html or magicoptions.html)
- Content area (edit file default.html)
- Bottom contact bar (edit file defaultmenu.html or magicoptions.html)
How does the UVM Publishing system work?
The UVM Web Template uses a centrally located PHP script called Magicscript to ensure a cohesive appearance on all UVM Web pages using the template. That means that if UVM decides to change the look and feel of the UVM Web site, your departmental pages will "flip over" into this new look, while still maintaining your links, content and graphics.
The template heavily relies on cascading style sheets to apply color, typography, and layout to the UVM Web Template. Some major tags are already preconfigured for use with the template.
An explanation of preconfigured styles
When you select an HTML template that is designed by the Web Team, certain design calls come along with it. Size and text styling is applied to common elements. Here are some examples:
Heading 1
Note heading 1 is generally reserved for The University of Vermont
.
Heading 2
Note heading 2 is generally reserved for your site's title, but is also recommended for use in the content area when no banner option is used.
Heading 3
This is sample default text.
Heading 4
This is sample default text.
Heading 5
This is sample default text.
Heading 6
This is sample default text.
