Introduction to Ag Financial Management Registration Deadline

Time: 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
Location: Various Vermont Locations
Description: This course provides farmers with the knowledge they need to understand and complete a balance sheet, income statement and cash flow statement. Participants will learn the basics of budgeting and skills to anticipate the financial needs of their farm operations. Participants can choose to participate in a clinic with one-to-one assistance at no additional charge.
Classes will be offered simultaneously in multiple locations in Vermont, with an on-site instructor at each location. Registration discounts are available for people who have completed Growing Places and who register by the early registration deadline.
Dates: Feb. 6, 13 & 20, 2013. Locations: Middlebury, Berlin and St. Johnsbury. Times: 1-4 pm.

Poultry Production: Profiting- Layers, Broilers, Turkeys, Ducks

Time: 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

Description: The course is for aspiring or beginning farmers (individuals with limited or no experience with poultry rearing) seeking to learn about poultry production, marketing, processing, and sales of poultry and poultry products in New York State. You do not necessarily need to be raising poultry in NYS to benefit from this course.Many new farmers get started with poultry, because it’s a relatively low-investment enterprise with a fairly quick turnaround time from investment to revenue. The margins can be slim though, and you need all the skill you can acquire in order to produce a safe product and have a profitable enterprise. This course was designed to help!

Soil and Nutrition Conference: Putting Principals into Practice

Location: Northampton, MA
Description: This conference aims to grow the movement for enhancing soil fertility as a basis for the long-term ecological and economic sustainability of farming, the environment, and society as a whole. The focus of this year’s conference is applying practical management strategies on the farm from principles of biological soil fertility. The lead speaker is John Kempf from Middlefield, OH, with Dan Kittredge and Derek Christianson as co-panelists.

Agronomy Plus for Farmers and Service Providers

Description: Facing low profit margins heading into the new year, many dairy farmers are looking for ways to survive--and thrive--in these tough economic times. University of Vermont (UVM) Extension is sponsoring a day-long meeting at six locations for farm operators and managers to help them improve profitability in the new dairy economy. Sessions will cover
a diverse range of topics including soybean and snaplage production, successful implementation of high-forage diets, maximizing forage yield and quality, modern vaccination programs and ways to control high feed costs and reduce feed losses on the farm.

Raw Milk Meetings

Description: Rural Vermont is hosting several regional RAW MILK MEETINGS for farmers to:
-Get support in preparation for Agency of Agriculture raw milk dairy inspections
-Provide feedback about potential improvements and changes to the raw milk law
-Network, socialize, and share a meal with other raw dairy farmers

Description: Join Vermont FEED and the Burlington School Food Project for the most inspiring, fun and wildly alive culinary event of the year! Jr Iron Chef VT is a cooking competition for middle and high school students from all across Vermont that should not be missed. Introduction to Permaculture Design Deadline

Description: The UWW Permaculture Course is a three credit semester-long online course that offers students a foundation in permaculture history, ethics, principles, design process, and practical applications. The framework behind the theory and practice of permaculture is rooted in the observation of natural systems. By observing key ecological relationships, we can mimic and apply these beneficial relationships in the design of systems that serve humans while helping to restore the natural world. This course trains students as critical thinkers, observers, and analysts of the world(s) around them, and then goes on to provide students with the tools needed to design for inspired and positive change.
Enrollment open now for UWW 397P Introduction to Permaculture Design, Spring 2013! This course is part of the online Sustainability Studies program at the University Without Walls, housed at UMASS-Amherst. It can be taken by non-degree seeking students and matriculated students. Vegetable Farming: From Season-Long Care to Harvest

Description: This course is for serious aspiring farmers or those with at least one growing season of vegetable farming experience. You should already have a basic understanding of how to select crops, manage bed prep, seeding, and transplanting. This course is focused specifically on production systems used in the Northeast, so is targeted to people farming in that region.This 5-week course will take you from transplanting to harvest, including information on in-season fertility; integrated pest management including pest ID and control; weed control options; harvesting strategies; and tips for marketing your products. Be prepared to create an in-season fertility and pest/weed control plan as part of this course. Weekly homework will focus on preparing you to make good decisions in the coming growing season.

Holistic Financial Planning: Including Farm Profit

Time: 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

Description: If you’ve been struggling to make your farm operation profitable without driving yourself into the ground, this financial planning course is for you. Ultimately it will help you with the delicate balancing act that all farmers must succeed in: balancing healthy profits with healthy land and a healthy farm family and personal life. You will learn how to make financial decisions toward farm & family values and goals, and how to build profit into your plans up front, rather than hoping there is something left once expenses are subtracted from income. If you have been struggling with the financial statements in your business plan, this is a great course to help you focus in on these and get clear on your numbers.

Target Audience:
This course is intended for farmers with at least one season of management experience and some record of their farm’s income and expenses (even if this information is stored on scraps of paper in a shoebox!). This course will move at an intense pace, with time to catch up at the end.
If you have not yet started farming, you are welcome to take the course, but you will need to do extra legwork to research realistic potential expenses and income for your planned enterprises.
