Open Forum on Vermont's Current Use Program
Time: 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Location: Barton, VT
Description: This is one of many forums on this topic, and will be held at Lake Regions Union High School. The Vermont Senate Committee is soliciting public input into the effectiveness, efficiencies, and fairness of the law. Current Use, also called the Use Value Appraisal program, was adopted in 1978 by the Vermont legislature. The purpose of the law was to allow the valuation and taxation of farm and forest land based on its remaining in agricultural or forest use instead of its value in the market place. The primary objectives of the program were to keep Vermont's agricultural and forest land in production, to help slow the development of these lands, and to achieve greater equity in property taxation on undeveloped land. About 1/3 of Vermont’s land is enrolled in the program. All citizens are invited to share their experiences with the program.
