The Vtrim Weight Management Program provides the gold standard treatment for overweight individuals and obesity. The program components are derived from a large body of obesity research, both conducted at UVM and at other universities. Because Vtrim is research-based, the program protocol continually evolves as new research findings emerge. As a referring physician, you can have confidence that the program is up to date and in line with current evidence-based practices for weight loss. The Vtrim Program is based on behavior modification. Participants learn how to modify their daily behavior around eating and exercise so that weight loss is achievable.
Vtrim provides the framework to succeed at weight loss. We teach people how to consistently eat less, move more and adopt new ways of managing daily choices that support long term success. Our definition of success does not always match initial aspirations of Vtrim participants. It is our goal to teach people the difference between clinically-meaningful weight loss and a “dream” weight loss. We encourage goal setting that is realistic and in line with research and clinical standards for success. Your patients will be encouraged to lose 5-10% of their baseline weight which is in line with the IOM guidelines. Weight losses in this range can decrease blood pressure, decrease cholesterol, improve blood glucose control and decrease the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
83% of participants completing the Vtrim Program lose more than 5% of their baseline weight. The average loss is 24 pounds in 6 months.
All Vtrim group facilitators complete a 45-hour training on how to lead the Vtrim groups and teach the curriculum. Facilitators are recertified on a yearly basis. All classes are closely monitored to ensure the expected research outcome is achieved and that the Vtrim protocol is delivered consistently for each group. Most facilitators are Registered Dietitians, Registered Nurses or Masters Level Counselors or psychologists. All must meet minimum education and work experience requirements.
