Body Mass Index (BMI)

BMI stands for "Body Mass Index," which is an estimate of your body fat, based on your height and weight. Because it's based on these numbers, it's a gender-less measure that's interpreted the same way for both men and women.

BMI FIELD

  • A BMI between 19 and 24.9 is considered a healthy weight. Weight loss is not necessary for overall health within this range.
  • A BMI of 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight.
  • A body-mass index over 30 indicates obesity.

There's solid evidence that a BMI over 25 is associated with an increased risk for diseases such as high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes and some cancers; when BMI surpasses 30, your risk for these diseases increases significantly.
