Class of '60

Ken Klein and wife Cindy live in New Rochelle, N.Y. They have two grandsons, Bradley Pogostin and Austin Berger. Harvey and Joyce Hinman Butterfield of South Glens Falls, N.Y., are both retired. They enjoy traveling and visiting their children. Carolyn Sims Watts of West Yarmouth, Mass., wrote that her daughter, Holly Jean Arnott, attended flight safety in Vero Beach, Fla., where she completed her commercial pilot’s rating in 1997. Roger Amidon is finishing his sabbatical at China Medical College Hospital in Taichung, Taiwan, where he worked with the clinical faculty in community medicine, researching health problems of the aging. He wrote that China Medical College has an international reputation for their research and training in integrating traditional Chinese medicine with Western medicine. Roger will continue as a consultant to the hospital. He hopes to contact UVM alumni in Taiwan before his next visit. Herzl Spiro, MD ’60, represented UVM at the investiture of Nancy Zimpher as chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee on March 26, 1999. Joan Loveridge-Sanbonmatsu received several honors in 1998: the American Red Cross Overseas Presidential Citation for Social Change, SEED Award for Outstanding Work with Disabled Students at SUNY-Oswego, the Women’s Center Award, and the Intensive English Program Award at SUNY-Oswego. She retired as a professor of communication studies and women’s studies. Joan and her husband spent the winter in Cuernavaca, Mexico, at an intensive Spanish program.


Class of '62

John Whelan and his wife, Bunny, now live in Seven Lakes, N.C., near Pinehurst, “golf capital of the USA.” John retired from the National Security Agency in 1994, after thirty-three years of federal service. Now a real estate broker, he manages Coldwell Banker, Prime Resort Real Estate office in Seven Lakes. Dr. Jonathan Tenzer represented UVM at the inauguration of Gregory Farrington as president of Lehigh University last April. Jules Older was named co-winner of the Harold S. Kirsch Award for excellence in snowsports magazine writing, the second time he has received this honor. He also received honorable mention for his book, Ski Vermont. Jules is editor-in-chief of Ski Press, Canada’s biggest ski magazine, and he is a writer for Vermont Quarterly. Jules also writes for Journey, Vermont Magazine, Yankee, Inside Tracks, The New York Post, and the Providence Journal. Patricia Bishop McKean thoroughly enjoyed reunion in June 1998. She thought it was wonderful to be back on campus and see classmates and friends from the classes of ’63 and ’64. After thirty-seven years at The American Stock Exchange, Charles Stevens will retire on July 1, 1999. He wrote of his future plans, “On to Pennsylvania and real estate development.” Stephen Burzon and his wife, Nancy, recently purchased their dream home, a 1790 restored farmhouse, in Danby four Corners, where they plan to live in a year or two. They are living in Texas, where Steve has his own business, Steve Burzon marketing Event Media Partners, which does general magazine consulting and brokers relationships between magazines and sponsored events. Their son, Matthew, will attend Holderness Academy in Plymouth, N.H., next September. Their two duaghters are working and raising their families in Connecticut. Joyce Frechette Fifield and husband David ‘61 make their home in Clifton Park, N.Y. Joyce is retiring after 23 years of teaching pre-school, the last nine as director. David retired in 1995. He prepares income taxes in season and enjoys operating his antique tractors at their summer home in South Hero, Vt. The Fifields have three children: Stephen is a major in the New York Air national Guard, where his pilots C-130 aircraft on missions to the South and North Poles. Susan taught school for two years and is now a stay-at-home mom with her own custom sewing business. Sarah is an attorney in Albany, N.Y. Joyce and David both enjoy golf and expect to travel more after retiring. Tom Allen ‘63 retired a director of air resources for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation in 1996. He was presented with the S. Smith Griswold Award by the Air and Waste Management Associaiton, an award given nationally for outstanding accomplishment in the control and prevention of air pollution. He and his wife, Patricia Hoskiewicz Allen, your class secretary, live in Clifton Park, N.Y. Tom is partner in ARG, LLC, an air pollution consulting firm, is a trainer for the California Air Resources board, and works with the northeast states in their air pollution training activities. One week a month, Patty joins Tom for a training session somewhere within the U.S., and they have enjoyed seeing our beautiful country, inlcuding Hawaii and Alaska. They have three sons: Tom is with hartford Steam Boiler Inspection & Insurance Co., and he and Mary live in the Chicago area; Dave recently returned from living in Alaska and is an attorney in Albany, and Brian and Katie live in Boston, where Brian is head brewer with the Boston Beer Works. In addition to all the travel, they’re taking up golf and enjoy gardening and dancing in their spare time.


Class of '63

Now that I’m back in the USA after seven years in The Netherlands, there’s no excuse for not contacting me so I can include your news in our class column. I know you’re all out there. I’ve even talked with some of you during the past year, and we do have some exciting things to share. So, let’s not be the class with just the secretary’s address listed in our column. For your convenience, please use my email address. I’d love to hear from you. In the meantime, spring is here, and I wish all of you a happy and healthy year. Enjoy what you like to do most. Maureen Oliver Mintz wrote that she is enjoying her second career as a part-time assistant in the business office of a private school. Her leisure activities include reading, participating in a book club, playing bridge and golf, cross-country skiing, and taking vacations. Her husband is still a busy pediatrician. Daughter Jessica graduated from Williams College in 1998 and is spending a year in Taiwan and China. Son Joseph attended Ithaca College for a year and now lives and works in Ithaca while deciding what direction to pursue. Maureen would love to hear from nursing school classmates.


Class of '64

Sadly, I must report that we have lost another classmate. Nancy Hike died in March after a battle with breast cancer. Joyce Lahey Draper continues to work full-time as a county health department director with the Tennessee Department of Health in four counties of middle Tennessee. She has two married daughters and two granddaughters. Her husband is an attorney with offices in Lookville and Gainsboro, Tenn. Soon, Joyce will have worked thirty years with the Department of Health. Andrea Layman Shiffrin is a speech pathologist and realtor in Orange, Conn. She just became a grandmother for the third time. Peter Bigelow’s son, Todd, has joined him as part of the Foresight Group, which specializes in life and health insurance for individuals and employers. The company has been in operation since October 1988. Christine Graeter Kassal wrote that her daughter, Sonja, is a French horn performance major at the Cleveland Institute of Music. She wrote, “After two months with an empty nest, Jim and I took in an exchange student from Bulgaria.” Carol Lange Ahern wrote that her family has relocated to Bethany Beach, Del., after twenty-nine years in education including many with the Department of Defense overseas schools in Germany. Carol began a new career in real estate, and she is looking for other UVMers in the Bethany Beach area. Paula Georges is a doctoral student in public policy at UMass Boston. Her son, Peter, attends the University of Pennsylvania, and her daughter is a student at Boston Latin School. Husband Dick is an associate professor at Boston University School of Public Health. Diane Rich Ladd of Clermont, Fla., is in her 32nd year of teaching high school foreign language in central Florida. She primarily teaches French, but also some Spanish. Diane enjoys visiting her son, a 1998 graduate of the Air Force Academy, who is now a second lieutenant stationed at Travis Air Force Base in California. On April 25, 1999, Douglas Barrett represented UVM at the inauguration of Walter Harrison as president of the University of Hartford in Connecticut. Have an enjoyable summer and keep the news coming in.


Class of '65

Ann Stebbins Cioffi’s family has owned the Dartmouth Bookstore for the past 115 years. It is the oldest bookstore in America that has been continuously operated by the same family (Ann’s family, the Storrs).


Class of '66


Fremont and Marsha Hitchcock (’67) Nelson wrote that their son, Ethan ’98, has joined his father on Scotch Burn Farm in Ryegate, Vt. Son Matthew ’95 is an area service manager with New Holland North America in Leola, Pa. Al Secunda was delighted to announce the publication of his book, The 15 Second Principle, by Berkley Books in May 1999. The book helps people to follow their dreams, face challenges, and change limiting habits and beliefs.

Class of '67

William Meezan will be leaving his position as the John Milner Professor of Child Welfare at the University of Southern California at the end of this academic year. He and his life partner of twenty years, Michael Brittenback, who is a church musician and concert pianist, will be moving to Ann Arbor, Mich., where Bill will become the first Marion Elizabeth Blue Professor of Families and Children at the University of Michigan School of Social Work. His installation into that endowed chair will take place on October 5, 1999. The School of Social Work at the University of Michigan is considered to have the finest social work program in the country. Michael Sutliff owns a sporting goods store and ski shop in Gloversville, N.Y. His wife, Pat Bouffard (’66) Sutliff, teaches high school French. The Sutliffs’ daughter, Amy ’93, teaches high school in Scottsdale, Ariz., and their son, Matthew, a likely future UVM student, is living and working in Essex Junction, Vt. Mike would like to hear from old friends. Richard Strauss of Peabody, Mass., was named Man of the Year by the Brotherhood of Temple NerTamid on May 5, 1998. Later that month, he was elected president of the Temple. On May 17, his son, Robert, graduated from St. John’s Prep, and he now attends Babson College. May 30, son Jonathan graduated from Lehigh University. On June 3, Richard was honored by Cohen-Hillel Academy with the Presidential Award for outstanding service and dedication to the Jewish day school. George Shapiro and his wife, Amy Geffen, live in Forest Hills, N.Y., with their sons, Andrew and Douglas. George is an associate with a major medical malpractice law firm in New York City. Amy is director of professional development with the Reinsurance Management Society. Andrew attends Stuyvesant High School and is interested in engineering. Douglas holds an orange belt in judo and studies fencing and mathematical computations. George and family would welcome calls from UVM friends.


Class of '68

Marianne Martin Hall’s son, Todd Rogow ’93, G’95, has earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business administration from UVM. Marianne’s daughter, Jennifer Rogow ’95, is now enrolled in medical school in the state of Washington. Her youngest child, Meagan Rogow, is currently a UVM student. Carolyn Mirkin Reich wrote that she lives in Westwood, Mass., with her husband, Richard, and daughter Cara, who is in high school. Her son, Ben, is a college student. Carolyn works in the Westwood schools as a substitute nurse. Robert Rudd continues to be a program administrator of the 410 bus “Bee-Line System,” which serves all of Westchester County as well as the surrounding areas. Peter Watson has played the Highland Bagpipes for the past three years and continues to repair wooden boats and houses. He and his wife, Clara, are home-schooling Holly and Forest. Clara works with flower essences for healing; Holly is learning piano; and Forest is learning ice hockey. The family gives horse-drawn hayrides and enjoys sailing and ice boating.


Class of '69

Marilyn Lanou Hindes is teaching an alternative program for learning-impaired students. She enjoys being a grandparent. Nancy Eddy has worked at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center on the general surgery/vascular floor since 1974. She would love to hear from classmates and invited friends who are traveling through White River Junction to give her a call because she’s not far from the 89-91 interchange. Leslie Wernick Leslie works for a non-profit environmental organization that advocates green plans (comprehensive, systematic, long-term environmental strategies). Her office is in New York, and she is currently working on a green plan for New York and New England, a satisfying challenge for her. Leslie’s son, Tristan, was married in June 1998. Robert Gilbert is chair of the USF&G insurance companies’ national advisory council and a member of their board of directors. Susan Brown Lanning wrote that while working on building her consulting business, she reconnected with Pam Marvinney Banks on many occasions, including a Theta Christmas party in Manhattan with her daughter, Liz, a Theta and a new Manhattan “Upper East Sider.” Susan would love to hear from other old friends because “the good times aren’t over.” Arthur Brown teaches history and coaches girls’ track at Stamford High School in Connecticut. He was expecting his twin daughters to be on the team next season. Steve Kunken has been elected village justice for the Village of Huntington Bay, N.Y., since 1994. His wife, Nicolette Pach, is presiding over the first family court drug court in the country. Michael McMorrow wrote that both of his children have “left the nest.” His daughter is a Spanish translator in Madison, Wisc., and his son, Gavin, completed his studies at UVM. Linda McMeekin is a hospice nurse with the Visiting Nurse Association in Colchester, Vt. Mike and Diane Smith (’71) King are still living in Rose Prairie, British Columbia, Canada, on a 320-acre farm in the foothills of the Rockies. Mike is line crew foreman for B.C. Hydro in the Fort St. John district. The Kings have four children and two grandchildren. Their youngest daughter, Rebecca, attends the University of Regina and plays on the women’s hockey team. Charles Howard, MD ’69, represented UVM at the inauguration of Stuart Cook as president of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey last April.
