Class of '70

We had a great time at our 30th reunion. Plan to come back next time for a great weekend with the class of ’68 and ’69. Our new class officers are Paul Trono, president, Linae Johnson Schroeder, vice president, and David Southard, our new secretary. Dr. James Hadley was appointed to a five-year term on a senior board of examiners for the American Academy of otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery. He is also chairman of the academy’s allergy and immunology committee and the medical devices and drugs committee. James is clinical associate professor of surgery at the University of Rochester Medical Center and is in private practice with Genesee Valley Otolaryngology in Rochester. Patty Powers Lawrence and husband Larry have been married for twenty-three years and live in Weston, Mass., with their two children, Jessica and Alex. Larry is an investment counselor, and Patty teaches at Wheelock College Graduate School. Philip Rosen is associate general counsel at the National Association of Securities Dealers, Inc., in Washington, D.C. Dan Toy took a six-month sabbatical leave in Christchurch, New Zealand, with his wife, Lauren, who has a PhD in business. They were visiting faculty fellows a the University of Canterbury. Deborah Nordfors Weiss sent greetings to her UVM friends from her home in Newtown Square, Pa. Deborah and ADPi friends, Cajsa Nordstrom Schumacher, Jackie Emmons-Cortes, and Sue Bain Williams have had a mini-reunion each fall for the past four years. Pam Montague Kellogg has also joined them.

Class of '72

Because our class has never had a class secretary, I am happily filling the vacancy, and I encourage you to fill us in on what you have been doing all this time. Send messages to me directly via email or regular mail or send your news to the Alumni Office, and it will be forwarded to me. Hard to imagine that we graduated from UVM more than twenty-five years ago. Some of us have children attending UVM now. On a personal note, my son, David Moss, is a second-year student at UVM and a Phi Delta Theta fraternity brother. In addition, I am employed by UVM in the department of microbiology and molecular genetics. Congratulations to Michael Walsh for completing the Boston Marathon to raise money for liver research for the American Liver Foundation.

Class of '73

Ted Dudley is an award-winning real estate agent in Naples, Fla. He has been selling in the area for more than twenty years and says his career sales now total more than $200 million. Barbara Thomas Laverack ’73 and ’83 lives in Holderness, N.H., with her husband, Sam, and two children, Amy and Reed. Barb is still practicing dental hygiene and is program coordinator of a school-based dental health program, sponsored by Speare Memorial Hospital. Your class secretary returned home to Washington, D.C., last January, after spending a year in Beirut, Lebanon, where I taught journalism to university students and conducted workshops for Lebanese reporters.

Class of '74

Our 25th has come and gone. Special thanks to those who helped with the planning and fundraising. Thanks to their efforts our class has a tree in the new Reunion Arbor. The following class officers were elected for a five-year term: Mitchell Cooperman, president, John Snow, vice president, and Steven Rice, secretary. Christine Collins Allard and husband Dan of Colchester, Vt., have a daughter, Jennifer, who is a junior at Bates College, majoring in biology. Christine is branch president of the Merchants Bank in South Hero, Vt., and she recently served as treasurer of the Grand Isle Rotary and as a board member of Island Info. Cynthia Tarbell Pacharz wrote from Saranac Lake, N.Y., that her son Abe, started his first year at UVM this fall. Son Austin is a fourth grader. Cynthia has her own electronics business in Lake Placid. Brother Nathanael Reese of Orleans, Mass., sings with a professional choir, Gloriae Dei Cantores, which has toured the U.S., Europe, and Russia. He also plays French horn with orchestras and small ensembles and snare drum with the Spirit of America Band. Keith Rice is developing district cooling for downtown Orlando, Fla., and surrounding areas for the Orlando Utilities Commission. James Rikert wrote that his sons, Wade and Kyle, play on the UVM baseball team.

Class of '75

It’s not too early to begin thinking about our 25th reunion. Phyllis Ahlers Brunner of Falmouth, Maine, joined Woodard & Curran as vice president in the firm’s municipal business center. Keri Barrett LeBlanc is working in pediatric services as the pediatric director/nurse practitioner at the San Diego Children’s Hospital. She has traveled to Latvia with an international relief team teaching neonatology. Most of all, she enjoys her three children, Travis, Jason, and Katelyn. Mark Carraher moved to Syracuse, N.Y., in 1997 to work for Bristol-Myers Squibb in the development of biotechnology products in Phase II and Phase III clinical trials. Richard Cassidy is the author of "Civil and Human Rights in Vermont," a chapter in Vermont state government since 1965. This is a 1999 publication of the University of Vermont Center for Research on Vermont and the Snelling Foundation. He has been named an associate member of the center. Cleland Cochrane wrote that he and Mark Burdick play golf in Myrtle Beach every year. Cleland and his wife, Debbie, are building a new house in Bath, Pa. Their daughter, Gabrielle Christina, arrived on November 8, 1998, their anniversary. Wendy Coe was one of the founders of the Peace and Justice Center in Burlington, Vt., twenty years ago. They have many activities planned this year to celebrate the anniversary. Wendy has been the treasurer of the center since its inception. Becky Cook of Norwich, Vt., is a commissioner on the Governor’s Commission on Women in Vermont. She is "starting to look at fiber arts again." Robert Davis came to Burlington for college and never left. Janet Duke Baker and her family are living in the mid-Atlantic region so that her daughter, Dirke, can pursue her ice skating training at the University of Delaware. She was the first alternate to the U.S. Nationals as a junior lady this year. Son Noah graduated from the Northfield Mount Hermon School this year. He applied to UVM. Debra Foster-Brunst and her husband, George ’77, recently attended a UVM hockey satellite telecast in St. Petersburg, Fla. and the UVM annual luncheon in Sarasota, Fla. Debra and George live in Bradenton, Fla. Gail Gauthier Johnston has had Club Earth, A Year with Butch and Spike, and My Life among the Aliens, three books geared for 10-12 year olds, published by G.P. Putnam. Bob Gilbert is manager of Lucent Technologies data networking for service providers. Cathy Waugh (’78) Gilbert is finishing her term as president of Temple Sholom. They live in Warren, N.J., with their daughters, Sarah and Elizabeth. Janet Glenney Roche and her family moved to Rochester, Minn., in 1997 for husband Matthew’s research at the Mayo Clinic. Their children, Marcia, Aubrie, and Caleb are all involved in swimming, basketball, soccer, softball, and/or baseball. Janet took her first nursing job outside of the hospital as a public health nurse, and she is enjoying the change. Ramona Godfrey Long lives in Waterbury Center, Vt., and commutes to work in Williston. She acts in theater and film wherever she can get a role. Ramona acted in the Vermont-made film, "Mud Season," last spring. Judy-Lynn Goldenberg has been teaching four evening classes in business law and operations management at Johns Hopkins University as well as performing her regular duties at the Maryland Department of Labor. Carolyn Gorham Guest wrote from East St. Johnsbury, Vt., that, in addition to teaching, she cuts silhouettes and paper cutout designs. She is actively involved with the International 4-H Youth Exchange Association, local 4-H, and her church. Sharon Grancey started a real estate company ten years ago in Mashpee, Mass. She went to law school at night and passed the Bar in Massachusetts and Florida. Jane Haslun Schwab lives in Warwick, R.I., with her husband, Bill, and daughters Lindsay and Taylor. She is in her fourth year of working as a teacher assistant in a junior high school. The highlight of each year for Jane, however, is her "Pi Phi Girls’ Weekend." Twelve Pi Phis from the class of ’75 have gotten together almost every since our graduation. In addition to Jane, the weekend crew includes Nancy Haslun Wall, Becky Pardee Davis, Karen Critchlow Davis, Betsy Delaney Elwell, Sarah Jewett Gossler, Missy Dever Martin, Jane Libby Nesbitt, Rhonda Lucasey Rowe, Pit Rubalcaba, Laurie Burdett Stuart, Susan Allen Veasey, Betsy Bundock O’Neill, and Lisa Kreiner (’76) Stephens. Susan Heins Wernecke is practicing speech pathology in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont and watching her son, Greg, play high school football and run track and her daughter, Jesslyn, play basketball. Glory Lanphear Douglass informed us that two alumni received the Vermont Music Educator of the Year Award. Glory received it in 1997-98, and Reeta Colton (’74) Coughanaur received the award the following year. Glory teaches at North Country Union High School in Newport, Vt., where she was teacher of the year. Michael MacLeod-Ball started a full-service law firm in Kennebunk, Maine, in 1998, serving southern Maine. It is the largest law firm in York County, Maine. Debra Maloney-Evans recently completed her MS degree in nursing in a family nurse practitioner program, the only one in Vermont. Her class was only the third to graduate. Linda Goodspeed is adopting a baby girl from Russia. Paula Oppenheim of Shelburne, Vt., rekindled friendships with Roger Summers and Richard Sugarman in 1998. She is taking a shot at writing a novel. Joanne Packer is a field faculty advisor at Vermont College of Norwich University in Montpelier, Vt. John Partridge was awarded the Kraft General Foods Teaching Award for 1998 by the American Dairy Science Association at its annual meeting. John lives in East Lansing, Mich. Jean Plumer Leder and her family had a successful family camping/hunting trip last fall. The family usually spends about a month in Vermont every summer. Denise Poff Cross usually attends the women’s alumni basketball game; this year, she attended the alumni softball game. Denise encourages former teammates to attend as well. Patricia Porter Struna is one of a nine-member golf authority building a municipal golf course in the town of Bethel, Conn. Kathryn Sherman Grace has worked on an early literacy grant through the Stern Center for Language and Learning in Williston, Vt. She has taught this course to fellow teachers for the past three summers. Kathryn was awarded the Robert Stafford Distinguished Service in Special Education Award in 1996, and she won the American Legion Educator of the Year Award in 1995. She is also publishing educational materials through Linguistems, Inc. Lynette Stahlin Robillard said that after working more than 20 years as a nurse, she has given up her career to be a full-time mom. Susan Spackman Jones and her husband celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary in Scotland. Their children are enjoying Mid-Vermont Christian School. Carol Ciaschini-Storey wrote that she and her husband, Bill, are in their fifth year of home educating their three sons. The boys and Carol are in Charleston, S.C., while Bill finishes his last tour of duty in Meridian, Miss. Bill will retire from the Navy this summer, and they hope to settle permanently in Charleston. Susan Winston VanNess was promoted to collections marketing manager at Allied Signal. Claire Tessier and her husband have been on sabbatical leave from the University of Akron. They are in Zurich, Switzerland, where their daughter, Jessica, attends Swiss public school and is learning Swiss German. Donald Wood wrote from Gilbert, Ariz., that he is "exploring life in its endless interactions and possibilities."

Class of '76

Gary Gottfried and his wife, Debbie, live in Dallas, Tex. He is vice president of marketing and sales for Kirkland Pumps.

Class of '77

Joseph Doran has taught geography and American history at Castleton Village School in Vermont for the past twenty years. He and his wife, Linda, enjoy volunteering at the Castleton Historical Society. Dave Milligan and wife Debbie announced the birth of their first child, Jessica Lauryn, on March 15, 1999, in Heidelberg, Germany. The family now make their home in San Antonio, Tex.

Class of '78

Michael Durkin wrote from Rutland, Vt., that the "Christie Commando" reunion was held at Bob Hopwood’s summer camp on Mallett’s Bay. In attendance were Gary Catlin, Jeff Martin, Jessica Smith ’77, and Christopher Slack. Michael said that "despite dire predictions, the reunion turned out fine." Cindy Guild Fitzgibbons enjoys living in Cavendish, Vt., with her husband, Ray. Married twenty-one years, they have a son, Jeremy, and a daughter, Julie. Mark Haun and his wife, Janine, have three sons, Josh, Kyle, and Erich. They make their home in Pompey, N.Y., near Syracuse. The family is very happy that Mark has recovered from a brain tumor, and would love to hear from UVM friends.

Class of '79

I hope everyone had a great summer. The weather has been fantastic in Vermont, so start planning now to attend our reunion next June. We’ve had to wait an extra year to celebrate our 20th reunion, but it will certainly be well worth it. We will be sharing this special occasion with the classes of ’80 and ’81. Our class president Christine O’Donnell has agreed to lead our planning and fundraising efforts. Margaret Guiheen Vaughn was named to the 1999 Spyder U.S. Alpine Masters Ski team and was also the recipient of the 1998 Janeway Cup, the most popular and prestigious race on the New England Masters SISE cup circuit. She lives with her husband, George, in Wakefield, Mass. Elisabeth Miller Yeager is a landscape architect in Wayne, Pa., and keeps busy with house renovations, kids, and work. Holly Hopkins is also busy raising her children on their farm in Brodbecks, Pa. Paul Connors lives in Gladwynne, Pa., and has had his own advertising business for more than 10 years. Heather Barrett wrote from Seattle that she has survived breast cancer within the last year. Lesley Wassmuth is living in Hudson, Mass. She recently visited Molly McRoberts ’80 in St. Helens, Oreg. Ltc. David Kennedy of Yakima, Wash., enjoyed his return to UVM as a professor of military science in 1997/98. Daniel Cain and his wife, Joan, enjoy Austin, Tex., where Daniel sells real estate. They also look forward to their annual August visits to Vermont. Michael Gervais of South Burlington, Vt., is the first Vermonter to received the certified remodeler designation from the National Association of Remodeling Industries, joining only 900 national honorees. Marsha Roberts Blake lives in Barton, Vt., where she teaches 5th grade and raises her son and daughter. Deborah Lyford Dean and her husband, Phil, live in Dedham, Mass. Other neighbors include UVM grads Kathleen Welch, Sam and Leslie Griesmer, Jim Atwood and John and Andrea Ham. Mary Shaver McCormick is a dietician in Bismarck, N.D. James Chapman and his wife, Mary, live in Dover, N.H. Chip was recently certified by the Smartwood program, promoting long-term forest management. Karen Amet Fondry is living in East Montpelier, Vt., where she is a registered nurse for Blue Cross/Blue Shield. Karen and her husband, John, have a son and daughter. Cynthia Gardner-Morse is living in Calais, Vt., where she is busy home schooling her three children. Louise Mobbs of Richmond, Vt., is working as a sonographer at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington. Barbara Devlin Mayer works on a bone marrow transplant unit at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston. Ilyse Federman Gottlieb lives in Farmington, Conn., with her husband and son. Ted Lindgren received his master’s degree in education and is a school commissioner in Rutland, Vt. Christine Powers Montgomery lives in Essex Junction, Vt., where she helps with her husband’s construction/development business and volunteers in their son’s 4th grade classroom. Sandra Meyer Wilcox is working as a physical therapist in West Bloomfield, Mich. Condoda Smith Boyle is building a French country home on a horse farm in York, Pa. Julie Lundgren is an ecologist for the Nature Conservancy, living in East Providence, R.I. Patricia Nebel Sokolowski and her husband, Roy, recently started their own financial management business in North Ferrisburgh, Vt. Richard Servidio owns an engineering company based in Charlotte, Vt., that consults on national and international projects. Julie Davis is a public policy consultant and artist in Burlington, Vt., currently busy with her newborn son, Bentley. John Parke of Danville, Calif., met Jim Nolan, Pete Gobos, and Pete Nostrand in Telluride, Colo., for three days of bump skiing. Kimeri Brown of Lafayette, Colo., welcomed a new daughter, Eva, in September 1998. Patricia Martin Spence is planning South Burlington High School’s 25th high school reunion. Geri Reilly and her husband, Mike Simoneau ’73, sell Vermont real estate and keep busy with their two children. Deborah Black Topping, her husband, Larry, and their three sons recently moved to Charlottesville, Va. Mary-Jane Tankard Farnan owns an interior design business in Mt. Crested Butte, Colo. Mary-Jane and Darcy Warhurst Reber, Grace Galdi and Kim Hancock Newhart meet at a beach every spring since the "big 40." Maj. David Ward wondered, "Are there any Sig Eps in Honolulu?"
