He opened Forbes Global’s Shanghai bureau in the new year. Rachel Blinken Herz sent news of her life in Tel Aviv, Israel: “Although I live on the other side of the Atlantic (and the Mediterranean, for that matter), I look forward to getting the Vermont Quarterly with news about old friends and what’s up at UVM. So, it was a shock to see myself and other Kappa Alpha Thetas in the winter 2003 issue’s ‘Looking Back’ picture, which was taken in front of the Theta house in the spring of 1981, I think. I am in the bottom row, center, with black sweatshirt and short brown hair. To my far left is Lynn Morse; next to me is Vicky Newsham. Up in the far right-hand corner is Brooke Laffan ’80 in the red sweater. I am sorry to admit that the other faces are very familiar, but the names have slipped by. I have lived in Tel Aviv, Israel, since 1991 and have three children, a daughter and two sons. Life here presents challenges that I never imagined as an undergrad in Vermont 25 years ago. Although there is tragedy and terror on a daily basis, we live a surprisingly ‘normal’ life of work, school, afternoon activities, and lots of time at the beach. I came back to UVM for my 20th reunion and am looking forward to the 25th. I would love to hear from classmates. Anyone who happens to be in the neighborhood is welcome to stop by.”

I was able to stop in the Hanover, N.H., area in September and stay with Vicky Frazer ’83 and her family, who treated me to food, bed, shower, and laundry at their house outside of Norwich, Vt. Cindy Sandreuter Bolduc also came over that evening for some catching up and hearing about my ‘trail tales’ of bears, hitchhiking, sweat and tears as I worked my way North over 2,168 miles. Another UVM friend, Brooke Lane Finnel (’81), whisked me off the trail near Rutland to a fabulous dinner at the local Sirloin Saloon. Thanks to everyone for their support and encouragement, I was able to finish my hike on October 13 on Mount Katahdin. My journal is online at www.trailjournals.com/bluebearee for all to read. After 15 years during which he worked at four different newspapers, Eric is taking a six-month leave of absence from The New York Times to write a book with a colleague about the history of the World Trade Center. He has spent the past 13 months writing almost exclusively about the WTC and the events leading up to and following 9/11. He was part of a staff of reporters and photographers at The Times who shared a Pulitzer Prize in Public Service for their coverage of the attacks. '99 Stephane Piche is working for the Labatt Brewery (Interbrew) in Quebec as a territory sales manager. It is his second year there. He is also the father of a new baby boy, Benjamin. You can reach Stephane at stephane.piche@labatt. com. Stephane, good luck with everything and congratulations! Genevieve Pence was appointed to the School of Natural Resources board of advisors by Dean Don DeHayes. After completing graduate studies in South Africa, Genevieve is living in Maine and working for the Maine chapter of the Nature Conservancy. Very exciting. Glad to have you back in the U.S.! Tyson Lewis is now living in New York City, where he founded the popular band, “The Law of Fives.” He is also a published writer—nothing big, just some feature stories and supplements for a Connecticut newspaper. Tyson’s story is a bit humorous — UVM grad sets out to become a big-time lawyer, ends up a rock star…that type of thing. If you would like to read more about or listen to “The Law of Fives,” go to www.thelawoffives.com. Will Roya would like to invite all fellow alumni who happen to visit Las Vegas this year to come see his newest production, “Hypnolarious”. Hypnolarious opened January 19th at the Bourbon Street Hotel & Casino. Will, the show’s producer, is pleased to present America’s favorite hypnotist, Terry Tokes, in this internationally critically acclaimed production. Will, it is so great to hear that you are still at it. I hope some classmates can get out there to see you. Steve Reidy and Jeanna Berman ’00 are engaged to be married. I will update you next issue with more details. Chris Baker also got engaged over the holidays. Lindsey Kriete qualified for World Championships Ironman Hawaii on October 19, 2002. Andres Lopez is living in San Antonio, Tex, working in the engineering department for a new fiber optic communications company, called Grande Communications. In any spare time, Andres writes screenplays, plays tennis, and attends basketball games. On a very sad note, Paul Knopf and his private pilot were killed in a plane crash on Friday, December 20. Paul was a member of our senior class council, and he worked hard on helping all of us have a wonderful senior year. Our deepest thoughts and sympathies go out to Paul’s family. I wish you all a safe and happy new year.
