A group of us have been meeting to plan our 40th reunion. Al Peterson is heading up the reunion committee. Joan Seugling Tetzlaff, Jane Page Glen, O’Neill Keeshan, and your class secretary. We met in January and called some classmates to remind them of our reunion. So far, nearly 100 are planning to come to our celebration. I hope everyone will put the dates June 1-4, 2000, on their calendars and come to Vermont for a great weekend. We have lots of great activities planned, including golf at the new Vermont National Golf Course and parties on campus and in Burlington. If you haven’t heard from us yet, expect a call. Sadly, Jane Page Glen reported that her husband, Jud Glen ’52, passed away in April 1999. Jane spent last Thanksgiving with friends in Germany, where she lived for several years in the mid-60s. Joyce Zipf Harrington wrote that she has retired from teaching anatomy and physiology labs to future nurses at Indiana University after 28 years. She now enjoys traveling and visiting her children and grandchildren in Oregon, Minnesota, and Indiana.

While enjoying the benefits of retirement, I continue to live in Norwalk, Conn. My time is divided between home in Connecticut, Vermont for skiing, the Caribbean for sailing, and Europe for traveling. My frequent travel partner is Joan Moran (’58) McGee. We have enjoyed Paris, Venice, and a cooking course in Provence together, and we are now planning our next adventure. I frequently visit with a number of UVM friends. We heard from Charles Eldred of Yorktown, Va. He recently retired from NASA Langley Research Center after an eventful 36 years in the space program. He and his wife, Gail, enjoy traveling in their fifth-wheel RV. I’d love to hear from more classmates for future issues of Vermont Quarterly.

Roy Ackermann recently retired as a TWA captain after 31 years of flying. Roy and his wife, Elizabeth, live in San Juan Capistrano, and they are looking forward to doing some traveling. Their son, Eric, graduated from Cal. State Long Beach, and he now works for a major department store in Southern California. Dick Aldinger and his wife, Janet, still enjoy living in the Orlando, Fla., area. These are interesting times for our class. While many of us are enjoying a leisurely retirement lifestyle, it seems that many more are charging ahead in our careers or beginning second and third careers. I, for one, thought that I would be in retirement mode after seven years in Europe, freelancing with international universities and corporations. Rather, I find myself deeply involved in the charter school movement in New Jersey. As dedicated professionals and parents working towards creating educational models, we are constantly battling to protect what we earned through New Jersey law. I am currently director of the Greater Brunswick Charter School, located in New Brunswick. If any of you are involved with or have opinions about the charter school movement, please email me for continued discussion. On a personal note, daughter Karen, who attended UVM and received degrees for elementary and special education from Georgian Court College in New Jersey, was married to Gary Romein on August 14, 1999. They live in Wall Township, N.J. Daughter Kelly, an ’87 Bates graduate, lives in Hinesburg, Vt., and manages Hannaford’s Williston supermarket. My husband, Joe, thought he would also retire once we returned to the U.S., but he is working for Mitre Corp. His sons Scott and Jeffrey and granddaughter August live in Iowa, and they enjoy their visits with us. Best wishes to the Hon. Sara Moreau Gear, former Vermont state senator and Republican Party leader, and Joe Boyd. They were married in Burlington on August 28, 1999. After the wedding, they enjoyed a celebratory cruise on Lake Champlain with their family and friends. Sara and Joe will continue their leadership roles in the Republican Party. Shirley Mumford Ferguson lives in Hopewell Junction, N.Y., and is at Xerox. She is looking toward retirement and working in a non-corporate setting. Her son, Rob, who lives in Boston, was married last April. Daughter Missy is working on her dissertation at NYU, while son Jeff is a student at Bard. Lewis Sherman reported that he retired from an international health position with the Department of Defense in December 1997. Currently, he is serving as a part-time medical systems consultant with International Medical Consultants, Inc., and he is very involved in community service. He also enjoys an annual week with an Appalachian Work Camp, traveling, and many other activities. He, his wife, and their two sons are blessed with good health. Maureen Oliver Mintz is also enjoying a second career as a part-time assistant in the business office of a private school in Syracuse, N.Y. In her leisure time, she balances her work with reading, playing bridge and golf, cross-country skiing, and taking vacation. Maureen‘s husband continues with his busy schedule as a pediatrician; daughter Jessica, a Williams College graduate, is in Taiwan and China learning the language and traveling. Son Joseph is working in Ithaca, N.Y., and in transition. Maureen would like to hear from her nursing classmates. Margot Bellin Breckbill is enjoying “midlife,” her two granddaughters, and her recent certification as a Lamaze childbirth educator. She enjoys teaching and finds that her recent certification coordinates with her childbirth preparation classes. Georgene Walter Fabian continues to be challenged with her work as a welfare officer in Holderness, N.H. She is a CASA (Court-Appointed Special Advocate) volunteer for children and a longtime worker with a local Habitat for Humanity affiliate. Congratulations to Lyn Lifshin on her recently-published book of poems, entitled, Before the Light. Lyn’s poetry has appeared in almost every literary and poetry magazine. Let’s hear from more of you, especially Julie, Lainie, Lola, Melissa, and Sandra.

Based in Minneapolis, Dave is responsible for 15 acute-care hospitals in five midwestern states. He makes his home in Mound, Minn. David and Andy Hay Sonneborn are still living in Anchorage, Alaska. In July, they will have been there 22 years, and they still love it. David’s cardiology practice continues to grow; it is now called the Alaska Heart Institute. He takes advantage of the X-C skiing opportunities in Anchorage as often as possible, and he also keeps up with his avocation of birding. This will be his tenth spring on the Aleutian Island of Attu as a leader for Attours Birding Adventures. Andy paints professionally in oils and pastels and was recently honored by being asked to create the first of a series of limited edition fine art posters for the Alaskan Botanical Garden. Craig Boardman wrote that he and his wife, Karen, live in Mount Dora, Fla. They own two businesses, an architectural design firm and a health food distribution network. The Boardmans have two grown sons and six grandchildren, who live in nearby Orlando. Craig indicated that, as far as he knows, he was the only person to graduate with a BA in geology from our class. At the moment, he is working on a project to update the Boardman family genealogy from 1895 to the present. Perhaps some classmates would like to share some information. Nancy Castellanos Miller has moved to the island of Trinidad with her husband, Chris. The move is a temporary one, probably two years. They will live there while Chris works on a water purification project on the island. Jane Pelletier Graham is now living in Bow, N.H., where she is working full time as a dental hygienist. She has three grown children, and her first grandchild was expected in January. Norma Hanson Reynolds is the owner of a ladies’ clothing store, First Impressions, in Montpelier, Vt. Your class secretary has been having a lot of fun shopping there, and Norma is a great fashion coordinator. Stop in to see her sometime when you are in the state capital. Besides celebrating their 28th wedding anniversary, Diana Bowen Reynolds and her husband celebrated several other milestones last May—their middle child married, their youngest child graduated from college, and their only daughter announced the impending arrival of their first grandchild.
