Alumna Earns Fellowship for New Americans

Alumna artist Estefania Puerta received a prestigious national fellowship. Of 1,775 applicants, Puerta was one of thirty to earn a Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans—a decision made on the applicants' potential to make significant contributions to U.S. society, culture, or their academic field. The $90,000 fellowship supports Puerta’s current pursuit of a master of fine arts in painting and printmaking at the Yale University School of Art.

Since graduating from UVM in 2010 with her degree in community and international development, Puerta has become a U.S. citizen, and she is committed to ensuring others are given the same encouragement and support she was given while living in the shadows. As she completes her studies at Yale, she hopes to deepen her critical approach to her art practice and create space for more immigrant Latina artists in the art world.
