The University of Vermont

Undergraduate Research at UVM

Our Goals

  1. Encourage more young women to take science classes and to consider majoring in science.
  2. Increase the confidence level of undergraduate women and help them develop a positive self-image as they study science.
  3. Introduce young women to a variety of educational and career resources.
  4. Help young women understand that barriers need not prevent success.
  5. Encourage older undergraduates to explore research opportunities.
  6. Provide advice on graduate schools.
  7. Increase the number of women who receive bachelor and advanced degrees in the sciences.

One-on-one mentoring can be an invaluable experience. The difference between losing a good mind and molding a great scientist.

  • Mentees will be matched up with a woman scientist and the initial introductory appointment set up. Ideally, a student will be matched up early in her undergraduate career and this match will last the duration of her college life.
  • Once per semester a social will be held which is designed to bring together all partners in the program. This will provide an opportunity for students to learn the networking process which is so essential to success in scientific careers.
  • Travel awards will be available for undergraduate students to travel to scientific meetings with their mentors.
