A simple lab experience? Internships? Research? Shadowing?
What's the difference? A lab experience is for anyone with any time commitment you can spare.
To shadow, is to follow around and spend a day in the life of a professional.
An internship is a longer commitment (sometimes accompanied by salary or supply budgets and is usually applied for in a very competitive process.
Research can be large or small. Usually a person( faculty researcher or you!) has an idea (or hypothesis) for which they would like to find more information.
