What is the first step to doing "real research?"

Getting Started First Year Students:

  • This is the first step to obtaining a sponsor, to do a research project or simply for experience.
  • Females: Check out our Women in Science Mentorship Program
Other Undergrads:
  • Visit University Heights-North, Room 031C and explore our undergraduate research database through CW LINK. This is the first step to obtaining a research sponsor for minigrant or summer internship funding.
  • You need to have a research sponsor before you can do research for credit. To obtain one, visit us here in University Heights-North Room 031C. Next, speak with your major departmental office for info on requirements for research credit, as each major has different requirements. Finally, sign up with the registrar for credit.Up to three credits of undergraduate research involve approximately 9 hours of effort per week for the entire semester (3 hours per credit).
  • Now apply for Minigrants and Summer Internships.

Undergraduate Research Database (CW LINK)

Students are assisted in identifying mentors and research projects throughout the university including STEM, Humanities and Social Sciences,Business,Fine Art and Education.

The undergraduate research office maintains a data base of UVM faculty who welcome undergraduate students to conduct research projects under their mentorship. The office will do the work of contacting the prospective sponsor and setting up appointments for the student to meet with several faculty members and discuss her/his research area and what kind of project would be available. After the match between the student and the sponsor is made, the students can sign up for an undergraduate research course (such as BIOL 197, MMG 198, BSCI 197, etc.) or with the help of his/her sponsor compete for mini-grants or summer internships. Up to three credits of undergraduate research involve approximately 9 hours of effort per week for the entire semester (3 hours per credit).
