Department of Theatre
The theatre, Shakespeare advises us, "holds the mirror up to nature" so that we may observe ourselves in others. To study theatre is a voyage of discovery of other worlds, other times, other people, and through them, the creation of a liberated artistic human.
The study of theatre is to study that which makes us all human.
At UVM, the Department of Theatre embraces the concept that in order to understand this complex machine called theatre, one must study all facets of its totality. To understand the product of any performing art form, the participants must understand the journey of the performer, the director, the designer, the dramaturg, the technician, the playwright, as well as the audience. The faculty and staff encourage and embrace the understanding of breadth and depth in the field. Through this process studying theatre means we become a perpetual student of life.
