Department of Theatre
Access to building policy
Changes in the Departmental curriculum have made it necessary to allow students of theatre more access to the Royall Tyler Theatre at times when in the past, they were not typically allowed in the building.
Please note that the Royall Tyler Theatre front doors will remain open until 11:00 p.m. on a daily basis, but no interior doors should be opened for student access to shops, offices, classrooms, etc. without the written consent of a Department of Theatre faculty member or the chair. This will facilitate the need for students in acting classes to use the Craftsbury Room as a rehearsal space, which they need on a daily basis i.e., seven days a week. The Department realizes that this is difficult for police services, but given the lack of rehearsal space in the building and shortage of rehearsal time, there is really no other way for our students to get in the necessary rehearsal time if we close the building on week nights and weekends. This is risky for potential theft or damage to the facility and the Department has asked police services if it possible to make an occasional extra walk-thru of the Royall Tyler to do a visual check of things. Another obvious concern is that students may, with this increased access, end up being in the building alone or in small clusters. With this in mind, for their safety, we have asked that police service’s presence in the building (especially on weekends) be increased if at all possible.
Emergency phones are located outside of Men’s Dress on the Main floor, and in the hall outside the Design Classroom. Dial 114 on all University based phone lines.
Under no circumstances are students allowed in the scene shop, on the lighting grid, in room 210, room 110, or in faculty/staff offices without faculty, staff or a resident guest artist’s supervision.
