Small Ruminant Dairy Project

The market for goat and sheep dairy products is expanding, and Vermont farmers are working to meet the increasing demand. But the small ruminant dairy industry is still in its infancy and its sustainable growth depends on reliable technical assistance in production, processing, and marketing. Many small ruminant dairy farms are not realizing the returns they projected because they face a variety of challenges. Labor and transportation costs are often higher than anticipated. Few farmers have the production and processing experience and knowledge needed to efficiently produce goat and sheep milk, cheese and other products. Whole-farm planning is needed that considers personal values, sustainable production practices, and financial planning to build a solid foundation for this promising industry.
