Sustainable Agriculture Council

Vermont Sustainable Agriculture Council

Together, the Center and the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets established a joint sustainable agriculture advisory council in 1995. The council's legislative mandate is to "encourage the development and use of economically and ecologically sound sustainable agriculture practices." Council members are appointed by the Vermont Secretary of Agriculture and the Dean of Extension at the University of Vermont. The Council advises the Vermont Legislature, the University of Vermont and the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food & Markets.

The Council was pleased to recognize 2011 Sustainable Agriculture Award recipients Harvest Hill Farm of Walden and Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital of St. Johnsbury. Past winners include Post Oil Solutions, Shelburne Orchards, Harlow Farm, Intervale Community Farm, Butterworks Farm, Lilac Ridge Farm, Adams Farm, Golden Russet Farm, Blue Spruce Farm, Someday Farm, LaPlatte River Angus and Choiniere Family Farm. (The Council is currently re-evaluating the award and its criteria, and will publicly share the these as they become available.)
