McNeil Generating Station
05/2013 to 05/2014
Project Category: Research/Study
This study examined the technical and financial feasibility of piping excess thermal energy from the nearby wood-fired McNeil Generating Station, the city’s existing power plant, to a portion of the UVM campus and the nearby hospital. This community energy idea is often described as “district heating (DH).” If implemented, Community DH would bring UVM within reach of its student-supported goal of climate-neutral heating and cooling by 2020.
On March 13, 2012, fifteen students, faculty and staff joined the Clean Energy Fund for a tour of the McNeil Generating Plant in Burlington’s Intervale. Undergraduate representatives from the Clean Energy Fund committee were in attendance, as well as students from disciplines as diverse as Engineering and Plant and Soil Science.
