This study will examine the technical and financial feasibility of piping excess thermal energy from the nearby wood-fired McNeil Generating Station, the city’s existing power plant, to the UVM campus and the nearby hospital. This community energy idea is often described as “district heating  (DH).” If implemented, Community DH would bring UVM within reach of its student-supported goal of climate-neutral heating and cooling by 2020.

Clean Energy Fund Award: $33,000
Final Project Cost: $23,333

Project Champions: UVM, Fletcher Allen Health Care, City of Burlington Mayor’s Office, Burlington District Energy Service, Burlington Electric Department, McNeil Generating Station
