Comprehensive Campus Renewable Energy Feasibility Study

How significant a role can campus-based renewable energy play in UVM’s progress towards carbon neutrality?
The CEF funded a study to help answer this question and generate scenarios to aid in renewable energy planning at UVM. This study was conducted over the summer of 2012 by CHA (Clough Harbour & Associates), and examined opportunities for solar PV, solar thermal, geothermal, fuel cells, biomass, and wind across UVM's campus. It has the potential to lay the groundwork for future decisions about resource allocation to renewable energy installation projects on campus. The deliverable analysis of this study and renewable energy campus map will serve as foundational knowledge for both the CEF Committee and key campus stakeholders including UVM’s Campus Planning, Physical Plant, Facilities, Design, and Construction and senior administration.
The CCREFS study concluded that the most significant opportunity for renewable energy production on campus was solar PV. Incentives, good locations, and opportunities also exist for solar thermal and geothermal systems. CHA also recommended that UVM continue investing in energy conservation efforts. Student interns worked with CHA to prepare analyses and feasibility reports, as well as to document the progress of the study. February 24, 2012: Request for Proposal released for a Comprehensive Campus Renewable Energy Feasibility Study.
March 5, 2012: Mandatory site visit for interested firms. Representatives from fifteen firms attended this session, which was an opportunity to review the RFP and ask questions of the project liaison, Michelle Smith.
March 30, 2012: RFP proposal deadline. Nine proposals received in response to RFP.
April 19, 2012: Three firms selected to interview and present their proposals to selection committee, including a CEF student representative. Presenting firms included: Sebesta Blomberg, Weston & Sampson, and Clough, Harbour & Associates (CHA),
May 4, 2012: CHA selected to be the firm conducting the Comprehensive Campus Renewable Energy Feasibility Study.
May 21, 2012: Kick-off meeting for feasibility study occurred on this day between the CEF implementation team and CHA.
May 24, 2012: Kick-off meeting and Office of Sustainability orientation with CEF summer interns.
May 29-30, 2012: Kick-off meeting with CHA, FD&C, Physical Plant, Campus Master Planning, Capital Planning, Office of Sustainability, and CEF summer interns. Interns begin solar site surveys of campus.
October 16, 2012: Poster presentation at AASHE 2012 Conference on CCREFS project, titled "Mapping Renewable Energy Potential on Campus: A Case Study of a Strategic Green Fund Project"
November 13, 2012: CHA presented results of study to CEF Committee.
December 15, 2012: Final report from CHA.
