These STARS credits involve the institution's emphasis on sustainability in faculty and departments' research.  UVM will develop a process to define and track faculty research in sustainability during fall and winter 2013-14.

 

ER Credit 15: Sustainability Research Identification (3/3)

Description of credit:

STARS Education & Research credit 15 recognizes institutions that have identified their sustainability research and associated faculty scholarship and creative inquiry. The University of Vermont has collectively defined sustainability research most recently through the work of the “Envisioning Environment Work Group,” (EEWG) which was charged by the UVM Provost in October 2012 to inventory and assess UVM programs broadly related to the environment. Institutions receive maximum points for developing a definition of sustainable research, identifying its sustainable research activities and initiatives, and making its sustainability research inventory publicly available online. UVM earns a 3.00 out of 3.00 possible points for this credit.

ER Credit 16: Faculty Sustainability Research (10/10)

Description of credit:

STARS Education & Research credit 16 recognizes institutions where faculty members are conducting research on sustainability topics. The 2013 Envisioning Environment Work Group Report, a campus-wide survey showed that, of 74.5% of responding faculty self-categorized themselves as being involved in Environment Sustainabilty and Health (ESH) activities, and 72% of that total self-categorized specifically as “sustainability” focused. Of these, 32% indicated that they actively conducted research, and 49% indicated that they actively supervised graduate research. Institutions earn the maximum of 10 points available for this credit when 25 or more percent of faculty are engaged in sustainability research. Incremental points are available based on the percentage of faculty that conducts sustainability research. UVM earns a 10.00 out of 10.00 possible points for this credit.

ER Credit 17: Sustainability Research by Department (2.51/6)

Description of credit:

STARS Education & Research credit 17 recognizes institutions where sustainability research is being conducted in many departments. Out of 51 total departments, 16 departments are currently working on sustainability research endeavors, according to the 2013 Envisioning Environment Working Group report. Institutions earn the maximum of 6.00 points available for this credit when 75 or more percent of departments are engaged in sustainability research. Incremental points are available based on the percentage of departments that conduct sustainability research. UVM earns 2.51 out of 6.00 possible points for this credit.

ER Credit 18: Sustainability Research Encouragement Programs (6/6)

Description of credit:

STARS Education & Research credit 18 recognizes institutions that have programs in place to encourage students and faculty members to research sustainability. One such program is UVM’s Integrative Graduate Education and Training (IGERT) program which is the National Science Foundation’s flagship interdisciplinary training program, Other on-campus incentivized programs include the Clean Energy Fund, the Transportation Research Center, the Office of Sustainability, and programs at the department level, particularly in the Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources. Institutions receive maximum points for this credit by having an ongoing program to encourage students and faculty in multiple disciplines or academic programs to conduct research in sustainability. UVM earns a 6.00 out of 6.00 possible points for this credit.

ER Credit 19: Research Acknowledgement (2/2)

Description of credit:

STARS Education & Research credit 19 recognizes institutions that acknowledge interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary, and multidisciplinary research during faculty promotion and tenure decisions. The UVM Faculty Union Contract, Article 14.5, Appointments & Evaluation: Tenure-Track and Tenured Faculty states, "The University is committed to longstanding traditions of scholarship as well as evolving perspectives on scholarship. The University further recognizes that the role of academia is not static, and that methodologies, topics of interest, and boundaries within and between disciplines change over time. The University will continue to support scholars in all of these traditions."…” The University strongly supports collaborative and cross-disciplinary research…” Institutions earn maximum points for this credit by giving positive recognition to interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary, and multidisciplinary research during faculty promotion and tenure decisions. UVM earns 2.00 out of 2.00 possible points for this credit.
