You do not teach anyone to be a leader by teaching them a set of highly defined skills anymore than you teach someone to be a counselor by instructing them in attending skills. Leadership requires a level of understanding which goes much deeper than merely acquiring knowledge. It requires an awareness of the values, emotions, and motivations of the people you wish to lead. Perhaps more importantly, it requires the same understanding of oneself, because before one can most effectively lead others one must first have established a compass which directs their own life. This level of awareness and understanding may only have a rudimentary beginning in a weekend workshop or even a semester long course. Efforts to facilitate the development of leadership, then, might be said to begin an exploration- an exploration of oneself and the world one wishes to impact. The success of such an exploration is ultimately up to the person who embarks on it. - From Leadership: An Exploration by Kevin S. Price, Proactive Publishers 1993
