Search Tools - InfoEd SPIN

  • InfoEd's SPIN Database of Funding Opportunities includes:
    • federal agencies
    • non-federal agencies
    • foundations
    • professional societies
    • associations and corporations
  • SPIN offers users three different modes of searching as described below: Text, Advanced and Keywords.
  • Short training videos are available via the blue Help button at the top of every screen
  • Tips and General Guidelines
    • Make your Preference selections before choosing search terms
    • Save individual opportunities by using either the Email feature or the Bookmark feature found in the full description record.
    • Access and Manage Bookmarked opportunities by navigating to the Bookmarks tab at the top black toolbar
    • Save as many searches as you like and create an alert
    • Access and Manage Saved Searches by Navigating to the Saved Searches tab on the top black toolbar
    • To start a new search use the blue Clear button to clear text and keywords and start a new search.

Searching SPIN in Text Search Mode

Use Text Search Mode to do a simple search using words or short phrases to search the entire text of the SPIN opportunity record.

  1. Login to InfoEd with your UVM NetID and password and navigate to Find Funding at the top of the screen and click on it. At the top black toolbar hover the cursor over the Search tab and make sure Text Search is checked.
  2. Before specifying relevant search terms, click on the link to edit filters and make and save selections for various refining criteria.  Once you make these selections they never change in subsequent searches unless you go in an change them.
  3. Enter search term or phrase into the textbox. For easy instructions click on the Help tab for instructional information and video.  The grid below summarizes how you can enter multiple terms.
  4. Click the blue hyperlink Locate Funding to run the search and display results.

  1. Maximum results per screen may be adjusted at the button where it says 25 - click the drop-down box arrow and make selection.
  2. Quickly browse the short list of titles and sponsors and target possible matches.  For those matches, click on the hyperlinked title to access the fully summarized information. Once the full description record opens there is an opportunity at the top black toolbar to email to yourself any matches you wish to save.
  3. Close out of the full description record to get back to the search results.
  4. To save your search criteria to run later or turn into an alert click the blue Save hyperlink to name it and turn it on as an alert.

Searching SPIN in Advanced Search Mode

Use the Advanced Search Mode to search on specific fields of the SPIN program record.

  1. Log into InfoEd with your UVM NetID and password and navigate to Find Funding at the top of the screen and click on it.  At the top black toolbar, hover the cursor over the Search tab and make sure that Advanced Search is checked.
  2. Before specifying relevant search terms, click on the link to edit filters (same as preferences at the top) and make selections. You only have to make these selections once.  After the first time, they are saved for all subsequent searches and will only change if you go in and modify them.
  3. Use the first drop down box to select the field you wish to search on. Use the second drop down box to choose whether you wish to include or exclude the text that you supply in the last free text box.
  4. If you wish to search on more than one field, use the blue Add New button to include additional search fields and associated terms.
  5. After adding all desired terms, click on the blue hyperlink Locate Funding to run search and return results.

Searching SPIN with Keywords

Instructions for searching SPIN using keywords follow here.

  1. Log into InfoEd with your UVM NetID and password and navigate to Find Funding at the top of the screen and click on it.  At the top black toolbar, hover the cursor over the Search tab and make sure that Keyword Search is checked.
  2. If you have not previously made choices for your filters, navigate to "click here to edit them" and make your selections for Applicant type, Citizenship, Activity Location and others. Once you make these selections they are saved for all subsequent searches and you will not have to make those choices again unless you want to go in and change them.
  3. To make keyword selections click on the blue hyperlink "Select Keywords" which opens up a screen with a top section with two tabs - Explorer and Searcher - to assist in finding relevant keywords. Both methods of finding keywords may be used in a single search. The bottom section is where keywords appear for selecting and adding to the search strategy. 
  4. Use the Explorer tab to browse the 3 Category levels of terms. Category 1 is the broadest level.  Click on Category 1 Keywords to see associated Category 2 keywords.  Click on a Category 2 keywords to view associated Category 3 keywords which are the narrowest in scope.  As you click on Category Keywords, they will appear in the bottom section under the Choose Keyword Box.  Put a check in the box next to keywords you wish to include and they will then appear in the Selected Keywords box.
  5. Use the Searcher tab if you don't know where to browse for a certain keyword and wish to locate it for selecting.  After locating a keyword in the Searcher tab, click on the blue Show Subset button so that the term/s will appear in the Choose keyword box for selecting.
  6. After selecting your keywords, click  "Save Selections and Continue".
  7. To run the search click on "Locate Funding"
  8. Quickly browse the short list of titles and sponsors and target possible matches.  For those you deem as possible matches, click on the hyperlinked title to access the fully summarized information. Once the full description record opens there is an opportunity at the top black toolbar to email to yourself any matches you wish to save or you can use the bookmark feature in the upper right hand corner.
  9. Close out of the full description record to get back to the search results.
  10. To save your search criteria to run later or turn into an alert click the blue Save hyperlink to name it and turn it on as an alert.
