Searching SPIN with Keywords

Instructions for searching SPIN using keywords follow here. There are two disadvantages to using SPIN for keyword searching; you can only specify 10 keywords per search and you cannot easily choose broader keywords without including all the sub keywords underneath them.So unless you want to go in and remove each irrelevant keyword under a broader term that you want to include but that includes sub keywords under it that you don't want, you are limited to using the narrowest keywords at the bottom of the hierarchy. If you find the new SPIN keyword searching unsatisfactory, you can always use Pivot (UVM's other funding tool) for keyword searching and creating alerts.

  1. Log into InfoEd with your UVM NetID and password and navigate to Find Funding at the top of the screen and click on it.  At the top black toolbar, hover the cursor over the Search tab and make sure that InfoEd Keyword Search is checked.
  2. If you have not previously made choices for your filters, navigate to "click her to edit them" and make your selections for Applicant type, Citizenship, Activity Location and others. Once you make these selections they are saved for all subsequent searches and you will not have to make those choices again unless you want to go in and change them.
  3. To make keyword selections click on the blue hyperlink "Select Keywords" which opens up a screen with two sides: the left side being all the Available Keywords and the the right side for dragging over or using the arrow to transfer over an available keyword to the the Chosen Keywords side which adds it to your search criteria.
  4. Keywords that have a + sign next to them have sub keywords under them.  If you choose to add these keywords that have sub keywords under them to your search criteria all the sub keywords underneath them will also be added.  The only way to add just the keyword itself, is to add the keyword along with it's sub keywords to the Chosen Keywords side and then individually move the irrelevant keywords back over to the Available Keywords side.  InfoEd is considering a fix for this but it won't be ready until a newer release comes out.
  5. After selecting your keywords, click  "Save Selections and Continue".
  6. To run the search click on "Locate Funding"
  7. Quickly browse the short list of titles and sponsors and target possible matches.  For those you deem as possible matches, click on the hyperlinked title to access the fully summarized information. Once the full description record opens there is an opportunity at the top black toolbar to email to yourself any matches you wish to save.
  8. Close out of the full description record to get back to the search results.
  9. To save your search criteria to run later or turn into an alert click the blue Save hyperlink to name it and turn it on as an alert.
