UVM Sociology is a member of Alpha Kappa Delta, the International Sociology Honors Society. Our advanced majors and minors who excel are inducted into the Society in an awards ceremony every spring semester. This distinct honor can be helpful to students’ future career advancement, and gives them a way to stay connected to the field of sociology.
1. Alpha Kappa Delta
a. Article III of the Constitution of Alpha Kappa Delta sets the national requirement for membership at four or more courses in sociology with cumulative grade point averages of at least 3.0 both overall and in sociology and rank in the top 35% of their class in general scholarship.
b. The Department standards for Alpha of Vermont are cumulative grade point averages of 3.5 in sociology and 3.5 overall for both Juniors and Seniors.
2. Students are only eligible if they have taken two of the following four courses: Sociology 1, Sociology 90, Sociology 100, and Sociology 101. Students must have a minimum of 12 credits in sociology.
3. The Sociology Department votes every February on the new AKD inductees. The induction ceremony is every spring semester, usually near the end of April. The department pays the $40 induction fee to the national AKD office for a membership.
