Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in SOCIOLOGY

Need more information? The UVM Catalogue is the official source for information and requirements for the B.A. in Sociology. Visit the Catalogue.

Please note: The Major requirements changed in 2011-2012.

-For students who enrolled at UVM before Fall, 2011, and who have taken Soc 100, go here for major requirements form.

34 credits in sociology consisting of: Soc 001,Soc 100, Soc 101
Nine additional credits at the 200-level
Six additional credits at any level [Stat 051 or higher may substitute for three of these six credits.]

- For students who enrolled at UVM in Fall, 2011 or later, go here for major requirements form.

34 credits in sociology consisting of: Soc 001, Stat 051 (or higher), Soc 100, Soc 101
Nine additional credits at the 100-level
Nine additional credits at the 200-level
Three additional credits at any level

Things about requirements to keep in mind:

a. Soc/Psych Majors/Minors – Psych 109-110 substitutes for Soc 100, but a student would still need four additional sociology credits, not three, and the sociology department offers no one-credit courses at this time.  The psych sequence would substitute for Soc 100 for a minor selecting the soc 100 option, but would not substitute for any of the new minor requirements.

b.  Only three credits of soc. 285,286,288,289 count toward 200-level requirements.

c. Your CATS report automatically knows the year you entered UVM and will audit your record based on the requirements of that year.  However, I have been told that the “What if?” option on your CATS report automatically provides the requirements from the most current catalogue year.

For Sociology Majors only: The Department of Sociology offers an optional twelve credit concentration in Social Gerontology including SOC 020 and SOC 120; either SOC 220 or SOC 222; and at least one course from SOC 154, SOC 254, or SOC 255. Students interested in completing the Social Gerontology concentration are encouraged to consult their faculty advisor early in their program.
