First day there we spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to get to the gondola, which starts somewhere in the middle of the hill. Conditions were good-ol'-eastern-hardpack (certainly not as smooth as Sunday River) and the blue-square skier got spooked by the thought of snow snakes. When we finally got up to the top the famed snow fields were closed (looked more like rock fields to me) and it was cold (about 2 degrees F) with a heavy wind. There's a nice cruiser off the top though which led down to a mid-station lodge. In the afternoon we moved to the other side of the mountain (just below the snow fields). Misread the trail map and ended up on an ugly double black diamond trail (moguls as big as a VW connected by an ice rink). Not long but ugly. Ski-monster crashed and burned. Blue-square skier finessed the the run and looked great - not Olympic quality but got all the turns in and was in control. Lesson paid off I guess.
Next day the winds were so high that the upper lifts were closed so I took another lesson. Got a touch of frost bite on my nose. My only complaint was that there were no friendly moguls. It may have been too cold for them to develop but the cats had groomed everything with a blue-square marker and the only mogul runs were steeper than I'd normally like to do. (OK, so I'm a woosie.)
Off the hill - accommodations left something to be desired (steady supply of hot water) however...Carabassett Valley Brewery Pub had great beer! Also, we had dinner at Geppetto's in the base village (which is a lot like Snowbird's in that there are shops and non-resort restaurants at the hill) which was first rate (voted best restaurant in Maine last year).
