In January, 1993, I went to France to visit with my friend Elizabeth. For my 31st birthday, her husband took me and California ex-patriates Jeff and Molly (they had taken early retirement packages from IBM and were killing time in Grenoble) to Chamonix to ski the Vallee Blanche.
