Burlington--Vermont 4-H'ers competing in the regional 4-H dairy show at Eastern States Exposition did the state proud as they captured three of the four championships in fitting and showing and several in conformation.

The University of Vermont (UVM) Extension 4-H dairy delegation included 30 youths, all among the top competitors at the state 4-H dairy show in August. They competed Sept. 15-16 at the expo in West Springfield, Massachusetts.

In addition to individual placements, awards also were given to the best state herds by breed. Vermont won first place for Brown Swiss and Holstein, second for Ayrshire and third for Jersey. Vermont did not have a Guernsey herd this year.

For the fitting and showing classes, the judges evaluated the exhibitors on their poise and how well they presented and handled their animal in the show ring. Given the large number of competitors, several classes for juniors (ages 12 to 14) and seniors (ages 15 to 18) were held. In conformation classes, arranged according to age of the animal, the judges considered the animal's body condition and appearance when determining placements.

Vermont 4-H'ers captured both championships in the senior division with Adele Biasini, Morrisville, named Senior Champion and Christopher Girard, Lunenburg, taking Reserve Senior Champion. Enosburg Falls 4-H'er Molly Callan was the Junior Champion.
