University of Vermont

A Note from Staff Council Leadership

Dear UVM Staff,

Many members of our university community are feeling a great deal of stress and uncertainty right now about events in our country and around the world.

In these times, it is all the more important that we stand by and support one another, recognize when our colleagues and students are in need of help or a friend, and work together to maintain the well-being of everyone in our community. UVM is, and will continue to be, a university that values respect, integrity, innovation, openness, justice and responsibility – the tenets of Our Common Ground.

I’d like to take this opportunity to remind you of the resources we have available on campus for those who may be in need. InvestEAP is available to UVM employees, and can provide counseling, resources, and referrals both over the phone and in in-person visits. The Office of International Education can answer your questions regarding how travel restrictions may impact you. The Staff Council Office can help you connect with a peer advisor if you are looking for support or need help identifying other resources that could be helpful for you. Don’t hesitate to reach out to us.

In the meantime, we continue our work to support non-represented staff in a variety of ways by forming strong collaborations and working together with our partners around the university community. Recently, we have been working closely with Human Resources, Diversity and Multicultural Affairs to develop improved communication, processes and guidelines for salary increases this spring. Many staff members voiced concerns and confusion about the process last spring, and we heard all of you! HRDMA has involved Staff Council in discussions about FY18 staff increases from the very beginning this year, taking all of the concerns we heard from our staff very seriously and using that feedback to make improvements. We are optimistic that going forward the process will be much improved, with more transparency and clearer guidelines.

On that note, I would like to invite all non-represented staff members who have thoughts about the salary increase process to attend the February Staff Council Meeting as guests. A portion of this meeting will be devoted to discussion about this issue, and whether or not you have already shared feedback with the Staff Council Office, we would love to hear your thoughts. If you can’t attend, consider sending us an email – it is important to us that we hear from and represent as many staff voices as we can in our work.
