A Note from Staff Council President Renee Berteau

Welcome to summer!
It has been an incredibly busy spring for Staff Council and the University of Vermont and I wanted to take this opportunity to look back over the past year to highlight what Staff Council has accomplished on behalf of staff.
On May 15, 2015, I delivered my report to the Board of Trustees. My comments focused on our recent outreach efforts throughout the spring including Focus Groups and an Outreach Brainstorm Session and our progress on a final report with areas of potential focus to guide and direct Staff Council advocacy. I also touched on our increased collaboration with the Division of Human Resources, Diversity and Multicultural Affairs. In addition, I was able to congratulate UVM’s class of 2015 graduates at Commencement. You can read my speech here.
I also want to commend the work of our four Standing Committees and Executive Board who have accomplished much this year. You can read detailed information about our efforts and continued advocacy in our Annual Update which was sent to the Board of Trustees and senior leaders on May 5, 2015.
I also wanted to take this opportunity to briefly touch on the recent announcement regarding Non-Represented Staff Wage and Salary Increases for FY16. Staff Council recognizes that the University has provided across the board increases for the past several years and this change to provide flexibility in awarding pay increases to non-represented staff in order to address merit and compression has taken many by surprise. We also recognize that this change means that decisions made at the College, Division, or Department level on how to distribute the increase will result in different outcomes for staff across UVM. Final approval of proposed salaries will likely occur on June 18, and annual salary letters will be sent by your unit after that.
We have not yet heard much from staff on this issue, but we understand through our Representatives that there is a mix of praise, concern, and confusion for this change. Now, or after you receive your annual letter, if you have praise, questions, or concerns on the change to provide flexibility when awarding pay increases for non-represented staff, we want to hear from you. You can submit your thoughts to Staff.Council@uvm.edu or through a Staff Connect submission.
The 2015-2016 academic year is already shaping up to be a busy and exciting one and we look forward to working on the changes needed for staff, while making positive changes at UVM for all.
