Happy Spring to my fellow staff!
For some of you, like me, spring at our University means ramping up to finish financial work for the year, and set up budgets and prepare for the new fiscal year at July 1. For others of you, in your support of students, this is crunch time, getting ready to finish the semester. For others, you are gearing up in your labs for an extra push on research for findings that are promising for a grant.
We staff have such an impact on the University of Vermont. I am truly honored to be part of keeping the voice of staff strong in the accomplishments of educating our students, and running our business.
Staff Council has just finished conducting four Focus Groups with staff to better understand the needs of staff here at UVM. Staff were invited to participate through random selection through the help of the Office of Institutional Research. During the Focus Groups, I and other members of Staff Council listened to staff concerns and issues, and we are all deeply appreciative of the honest comments and information these staff shared with us. We are now working organize these concerns and issues into Common Themes.
The next step is to hold an Outreach Brainstorm Session on Tuesday, April 14, 2015 from 12pm – 1pm in Memorial Lounge, Waterman Building Rm 338. Participants in the session will be able to share their thoughts on several themes that touch on staff issues. The sessions will be designed using a “speed dating” model where participants will be able to move from theme to theme to share their thoughts. The feedback collected will be used to create a report to the Board of Trustees and University leaders.
This is an opportunity for staff to talk about their experiences as employees as well as share concerns and ideas to help the Council better advocate for the needs of staff.

I know how busy we are, but I would ask you to spend an hour with us at the Outreach Brainstorm Session to vision the changes that are needed here at UVM around the employment of staff.
If you are unable to attend, but would like to share your thought or ideas related to improving the experience of staff at the University of Vermont, please send them to Staff.Council@uvm.edu or create a Staff Connect submission. All information submitted will remain anonymous, but will be incorporated into the final report.
