University of Vermont

A Note from Staff Council President Catherine Symans

April 2014

Although the calendar says “spring,” the lingering piles of snow and ice continue to remind us that it will be awhile before we can let go of winter completely.  While we anticipate warmer weather, there is much to accomplish in the weeks leading up to Commencement on May 18th.  Before schedules become overwhelming, I was fortunate enough to spend a couple of days in Killington attending the Vermont Women in Higher Education 2014 Women’s Leadership Conference.  What a wonderful opportunity to meet women from higher education institutions from all over the state of Vermont.  Whether from UVM, Landmark College, CCV, or St. Michael’s to name a few, this conference serves as a reminder that there are many of us engaged in the profession of providing a quality educational experience for our students.

April also is the month when the Staff Council holds elections for Staff Council Representatives. We take great pride in being the voice of staff from all the Units/Divisions/Colleges, but the only way that we can continue to exercise this important responsibility, is for you to either volunteer to run for an elected Representative position or encourage and support a colleague who may show interest in this professional and leadership development opportunity. We are currently accepting nominations for Representatives until Wednesday, April 9, 2014. You can find more information about which Units/Divisions/Colleges are holding elections this year and a Nomination Form on our Staff Council Representative Election webpage.

We also welcome staff to serve on any of the four Staff Council standing committees and you do not need to be an elected Staff Council Representative to do so. From time to time, we seek staff members to serve on the various UVM Boards, Committees and Work Groups. There are endless opportunities to be a part of our organization and the Staff Council Office is available to provide information and support to any UVM staff member who is interested in participating in these many opportunities. Check out our Get Involved webpage for more information on how you can share your voice and be a part of Staff Council or contact us at 802-656-4493 or

This is your opportunity to make a positive impact and to contribute to making the University a better place for staff and for the rest of our community.
