A Note From UVM President Tom Sullivan
- By Tom Sullivan
Best wishes in the New Year to all University of Vermont staff members!
As you probably know, this past fall, UVM and the city of Burlington made headlines once again. UVM continues to be well known for offering many opportunities to students, faculty, and staff: we provide a rich liberal education in one of the best locations in the country for natural beauty, outdoor activities, entrepreneurial innovation, and flourishing creative arts. In October, The Atlantic remarked that UVM’s distinctive character as a Public Ivy combined with other local colleges make Burlington, Vermont a uniquely wonderful place in addition to “a strong sense of community,” “a software-company culture,” and a pervading spirit of altruism. In November, Travel and Leisure ranked Burlington the #1 college town in the United States, citing UVM alumni with strong school pride who also tout the lakefront and the thriving music and food culture. Of course, as residents of this vibrant city, we are proud, but not surprised by these accolades.
As we begin a new year, I want to share these rankings with you, because I believe you are the reason this institution and this city are such success stories. I believe the people are what make the Burlington area such a special place to live and what make this University extraordinary among our peer institutions. Your many and varied contributions to the campus and to the larger community of Chittenden County characterize this place. For example, charitable donations and the creative arts and crafts displayed by our staff at the Staff Council Holiday Bazaar & Food Drive and the considerable donation to Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf given during our Faculty and Staff Holiday Party demonstrate your talent, your community spirit, and your generosity. This year, our staff and faculty donated over 6,000 lbs of food to those in need.
Thank you all for everything you do for UVM and for this community! By working together and supporting each other, we build a bright future for UVM!
