University of Vermont

A Note from Staff Council President Catherine Symans

August 2013

Catherine Symans

Greetings! As we prepare for another academic year, Vice President Renee Berteau and I look forward to the opportunity to serve as your Staff Council leadership for the second year of our two-year term. Over the summer, we’ve been busy working with our Executive Board and the Staff Council Office reviewing last year’s accomplishments and planning for the year ahead.

Due to the recent restructuring of some units/divisions effective July 1, 2013, we are holding a special off-cycle nomination and election period in August and September to ensure full representation in Athletics, Diversity & Multicultural Affairs, ETS, President’s and Provost’s Office, and University Relations & University Communications. Click here to learn more.

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome our new and returning Staff Council Representatives. We have an outstanding group of dedicated and enthusiastic members and I ask that you take a moment to share any concerns, suggestions or ideas with your unit/division or college Rep(s). They are here to be your voice and represent you. Also, please join me in extending a warm welcome to Provost and Senior Vice President David Rosowsky and his wife Michelle who joined the UVM community on August 1st.  We look forward to developing a strong working relationship with the Office of the Provost and look forward to future conversations with Provost Rosowsky.

This academic year will be challenging for many of us as we continue to work towards doing more with less. The University of Vermont is not alone in having to find new ways of managing with limited resources while continuing to provide a quality education for our students. The most valuable resource is our people, the staff, faculty, and students, who make up the UVM community. It is important that we all work together to address the challenges ahead so as to create the best possible environment for all of us and for the future of the University.

Please know that Renee and I are willing to talk to you about any issues or concerns you may have. Enjoy the rest of your summer and we look forward to seeing you around campus!

Sincerely,

Catherine Symans
Staff Council President
