Forage Production Resources Available for Farmers

Affected corn plants

This summer’s exceptionally cool, wet weather continues to present unique and challenging growing conditions for Vermont farmers. The following articles — written by UVM Extension agronomy specialists — discuss crop fertilization and development, forage planting and insect pest information.

Corn Nitrogen Update

Dr. Dan Hudson, UVM Extension Agronomist

Corn fields are nitrogen deficient now due to leaching, and many farmers may need to side-dress to supplement manure applications. This article reviews issues to consider prior to applying additional nitrogen. (June 28, 2013) The related article, Be Careful When Considering “Fertilizer Enhancers” ( enhancers), provides related considerations. (July 8, 2013)

Late Season Forage Plantings

Dr. Heather Darby, UVM Extension Agronomist

Having had the wettest June on record, many fields remain unplanted and others will require replanting. This article outlines forage options still available. (July 3, 2013)

Recent Weather Brings Corn of Many Colors

Dr. Heather Darby, UVM Extension Agronomist Colors.pdf

Corn grows best with sunny days and warm temperatures, both of which have been scarce this year, and plants are not the dark green they should be. This article explains causes of color variation in corn. (July 7, 2013)

Wireworms in Your Corn?

Dr. Dan Hudson, UVM Extension Agronomist

While it is too late to take preemptive action against wireworms this year, if your corn crop suffered insect damage this spring, it is a good time to identify the culprit and make plans to avoid it next year. (June 21, 2013)
