Hops Production Field Day Scheduled For Aug. 15

Hops on the vine

Burlington--Interested in growing hops? The University of Vermont (UVM) Extension Northwest Crops and Soils Team is hosting a tour on Aug. 15 of Four Star Farms in Northfield, Mass.

The farm, owned and operated by the L'Etoile family for 25 years, produces grains, hops and turf as well as has a flour milling operation. Growers will learn the basics of hops production including planning, budgeting, building the hopyard, harvesting, drying, compacting and packaging. The field day, which runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., also includes a tour of the hopyard and milling operation and equipment demonstrations of a hops harvester, custom-built drying system and compactor.

In addition, the UVM Extension Northwest Crops and Soils Team will provide research updates on fertility requirements, variety selection, pest management and other best management practices.
