A theme of teamwork was at the center of the 15th Annual Breast Cancer Conference, titled “Working Together for Women’s Health and Wellness” and presented by the Vermont Cancer Center (VCC), with support from the University of Vermont (UVM), Fletcher Allen Health Care, Susan G. Komen for the Cure Vermont/New Hampshire affiliate, the Vermont Department of Health’s “Ladies First” program, and Front Porch Forum. This year’s conference took place on October 5, 2012 at the Sheraton Burlington Hotel and Conference Center in South Burlington, Vt. The event, which attracted nearly 800 breast cancer survivors, caregivers, family members and friends of survivors, and members of the general public, was free and open to the public.

Co-chairs of the 2012 event were Patricia O’Brien, M.D., UVM associate professor of medicine, and Michelle Sowden, D.O., UVM assistant professor of surgery and a surgical oncologist at Fletcher Allen.

“We believe no one should deal with the diagnosis of breast cancer alone,” say O’Brien and Sowden in their welcome note in the 2012 Breast Cancer Conference brochure. “The goal of this year’s conference is not only to provide education and support, but to emphasize that we are all part of this community. It is our hope to bring together teams of people who will collectively help solve some of the challenges associated with breast cancer.”

In addition to O’Brien and Sowden, several VCC members and UVM College of Medicine faculty presented at the conference, including Frances Carr, Ph.D., UVM professor of pharmacology; Kim Dittus, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of medicine and oncologist; Alan Howe, Ph.D., associate professor of pharmacology; Karen Lounsbury, Ph.D., professor of pharmacology; Julie Olin, M.D., clinical associate professor of medicine and oncologist; Cheung Wong, M.D., associate professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences and director of gynecologic oncology; and Marie Wood, M.D., professor of medicine and director of the Familial Cancer Program.
