A Note from Staff Council President Catherine Symans

August 2012

Staff Council Leadership with President Sullivan
Members of Staff Council's leadership team presented President Sullivan with a book of welcome on July 19th. From left to right: Jeff Bukowski, Ida Russin, President Sullivan, Catherine Symans, and Renee Berteau.

Greetings and welcome to another academic year! As your new Staff Council President, I am both pleased and honored to have the opportunity to serve you for the next two years. Vice President Renee Berteau and I have already begun our term with preparations for a busy and exciting 2012-13. I would be remiss if I didn’t express my appreciation to Ida Russin and Michelle Smith for their hard work and dedication for the past two years. They have accomplished much during their tenure and I look forward to working with Ida in her role as Immediate Past President.

I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome our new Staff Council Representatives and welcome back those representatives who are continuing to serve on the Council. We have an outstanding group of dedicated and enthusiastic members and I ask that you take a moment to share any concerns, suggestions or ideas with your unit/division rep. They are here to represent you and voice your concerns.

And finally, please join me in extending an especially warm welcome to President Tom Sullivan and his wife Leslie Black Sullivan. Staff Council Administrator Jeff Bukowski, Renee, Ida, and I met briefly with President Sullivan to present him with the beautifully assembled Book of Welcome that included quotes from Staff Council Representatives and Committee members, and he received our gift graciously and appreciatively. We are thrilled that Tom and Leslie have joined the UVM community and we look forward to a positive and collaborative relationship.

As we embark on a new academic year under new leadership, I am reminded of “Our Common Ground,” which describes the aspirations and shared values for the UVM community, and in particular the value of openness:

"We encourage the open exchange of information and ideas from all quarters of the community. We believe that through collaboration and participation, each of us has an important role in determining the direction and well-being of our community."

Please know that Renee and I are willing to talk to you about any issues or concerns you may have and Staff Council is ready and able to address these through collaborative efforts with others throughout the University community, especially our leaders, to ensure that UVM remains an outstanding place to work. Enjoy the rest of your summer and we look forward to seeing you around campus!
