Angler and Boater Advisory - Fall 2012

Fall field work has begun on the reef restoration project in Thunder Bay.  There is a lot of research and fisheries assessment equipment deployed on these reefs and adjacent sites; all the equipment is marked by buoys.  This equipment is being used to determine how many lake trout are in the area, and whether they are spawning on the new reefs.  A new research project is underway on the new reefs to determine what factors attract lake trout to spawning sites – the reefs themselves, other spawning lake trout, or the ‘smell’ from previous spawning seasons.  This work will help researchers and managers who are working to restore self-sustaining populations of lake trout.

Please stay clear of the surface markers to avoid fouling propellers and damaging equipment.

Details of the buoy arrays with deployment and retrieval dates are listed below.

Oct. 1 to week of Nov. 26: a pair of flag buoys approx. 50’ apart on each of 15 mitigation reefs

Oct. 1 to week of Nov. 5: 2 DNR trap nets located east of the array of migitation reefs; each one has three flag buoys and two orange ball anchors

Week of Oct. 8 to week of Nov. 7: 9 nets marked with staff buoys with flags and strobe lights at either end will be located on mitigation reefs

Week of Oct. 8: 3 nets will be set at RockPort, north of the Harbor

Week of Oct. 15th: six nets will be set – 2 east of the mitigation reefs, 2 on Grass Island Reef, 2 one mile southeast of the river mouth
