UVM Spatial Analysis Lab


The SAL is a busy place. Our team of faculty, staff, and students are typically working on 10-20 projects at any given time. While you would get bored with a complete list of everything that we are doing and have done we hope the highlighted projects below give you an idea of what we are up to. As an academic lab we can push the envelope in terms of methods and technology, but we pride ourselves in doing more than filling the pages of scholarly journals by generating products that help people make better decisions. Our projects are typically carried out with broad collaboration from government agencies, private industry, and non-profits.

Rapid, Local Aerial Photography & Mapping

eBee UAV
Along with UVM Transportation Research Center we are using UAVs to estimate the amount of fill needed to repair a road following major damage. Funding: US Dept. of Transportation.

NYC Land Cover

NYC LiDARIn collaboration with the City of New York Dept. of Parks & Recreation and Columbia University we derived sub-meter land cover for New York City from over 300 billion imagery pixels and over 15 billion LiDAR points. Funding: USDA Forest Service.

MD Tree Canopy

MC Tree CanopyTo support the University of Maryland's work in carbon monitoring and sequestration we mapped tree canopy at a resolution of 1 meter for the State of Maryland be integrating imagery and LiDAR into an object-based image analysis system. Funding: NASA.

Impervious Surfaces

Impervious MapWe performed high-resolution impervious surface mapping for the Lake Champlain Basin with an overall accuracy of 99%. The data is being used to improve the accuracy of water quality models in the region. Funding: Lake Champlain Basin Program.
