Higher Education Multicultural¹ Scholars Program (Bachelor's Level)

Environmental and natural resource issues affect every one of us. Society needs citizens from diverse socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds who understand the natural world and can work together to promote a safe and healthy environment. The goal of the Multicultural Scholars Program at the Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources is to create a more inclusive curriculum and atmosphere in the School and to demonstrate the relevance of natural resources to all segments of society, which will lead to a increased multicultural diversity in the natural resource workforce.

Sponsor: United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA)

Eligibility: High school seniors applying to undergraduate majors in The Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources at the University of Vermont.

Qualifications: Per the USDA NIFA, "Scholars will be selected based on academic ability, commitment to a career in the environment and natural resources, and enhancement of cultural diversity. Other considerations may include a student's status as a first-generation college student, chosen major in relation to the needs of the college or university, or projected human resource requirements of the environment and natural resources field. Students from all racial and ethnic groups are eligible for scholarships." Evidence of sincere interest and aptitude for success in a natural resources major. Special consideration given to candidates with demonstrated financial need.

Award: $28,000 for four years/$7,000 per year

Graduate Multicultural Fellowships at The Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources

USDA National Needs Graduate Fellowships: The Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources has USDA National Needs Masters of Science Degree Fellowships in the area of Forest and Ecosystem Health. These full fellowships provide tuition, health insurance coverage, and a stipend for multicultural students intending to pursue research in any of a range of topics related to healthy forested ecosystems in Vermont and elsewhere.

Benefits:

• a full tuition scholarship for the two-year program ($34,860)
• two years of health insurance ($3,792)
• a two-year stipend of $36,000 ($18,000/year)

Eligibility: To be eligible for the fellowships, multicultural candidates should be citizens or nationals of the United States as determined in accordance with Federal Law. Candidates should not have completed two semesters or equivalent hours of full-time graduate study or been previously enrolled in an academic program at the master's degree level. Completed applications must be submitted by 1 February 2010.

Doctoral Multicultural Fellowships at The Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources

Benefits:

• a full tuition scholarship for three years (approx. $52,300)
• three years of health insurance (approx. $5,700)
• a three-year stipend of $73,500 ($24,500/year)

Eligibility: To be eligible for the fellowships, multicultural1 candidates should be citizens or nationals of the United States as determined in accordance with Federal Law, have, or be near completion of an MS degree in a related field. Completed applications must be submitted by 1 February 2010.
