Using lumber harvested from the Jericho Research Forest, a local woodworker,
Bill Rowley, experimented with preparing and milling Japanese Larch
to construct a porch swing. Bill found Japanese Larch to be somewhat
difficult to work with as there was significant stress in the wood due
to its substantially fast growth rates and high amount of pitch. However,
despite these technical challenges, the end product was a porch swing
for his daughter’s new house. He concluded that he believes Japanese
Larch will make a good product for outdoor use and he plans to continue
experimenting with the Japanese Larch lumber for other products.
