Surface mining in Ankarana National Park (Ambondromifehy)
These women are using metal rods (baraminy, from the French la barre à mine) to loosen the surface soil. This method of mining is especially prominent in the rainy season when the soil is wet, allowing for direct sieving in these shallow pits instead of carrying dirt to sieving sites by the river. This site is within the borders of the Ankarana National Park, in an area called Alafady.
