Andakorovato region of the Ankarana National Park
Sapphire mining within protected areas is a major problem, and has hindered efforts to protect endangered species and habitat within several parks: Ankarana, Isalo, and Zombitse-Vohibasia National Parks, and the Sept Lacs GELOSE community reserve. Shown here is one region within the Anakarana National Park that has been almost completely destroyed by sapphire mining, prompting some park officials to consider de-classifying its protected status.
